One major problem with the text in bold. Kenny is not around for the entire campaign. He will either be gone as early as March 2020 (halfway through the campaign) or at the latest August 2020, neither exit date is conducive with the preparation needed for a side to play "decent football and looking like they are a better side" or to "gradually move up the seeding pots". The tough draw and management set up makes the task - set by the FAI - even more difficult. I expect, because of what I just said, Kenny will fail to live up to expectations at u21 level which will thus feed into the pressure of the senior job when he takes over. All in all a recipe for an unholy mess.

Exactly how I feel about it. Think it's a ridiculous way to set up what should be the most important age group beyond the seniors.

The FAI have managed to pack the schedule so that nine of the ten qualifiers are played by March 2020. Obviously the final game has to be played on the last match day in October 2020. This will be the only game not managed by Stephen Kenny.
March 24: Luxembourg (H) September 6: Armenia (H) September 10: Sweden (A) October 10: Italy (H) October 15: Iceland (A) November 14: Armenia (A) November 19: Sweden (H) March 26: Iceland (H) March 31: Luxembourg (A) October 13: Italy (A) Edited by DalyerRegular - 11 Dec 2018 at 1:06pm |

Obviously hoping they'll have qualified by then with the Italy away game last as well. Play offs 9–17 November. This all seems so poorly thought out, if Kenny is happy with his backroom team then you'd imagine they'll move to senior with him, it's completely disruptive.

Some going. I didn't expect them to front load the fixtures like that.

Was clear in his presser that he was gone in August 2020 regardless. Whether that actually happens when the time arrives well, who knows??

The more you think about it is really is an stupid decision to give him the job. IF we do qualify then someone new has to come in for the actual tournament

Especially if Mick does well and gets the senior team qualified for Euro 2020 and fancies a crack at WC22? At least then we'd keep an experienced manager in charge of the senior team for what is normally a tougher tournament to qualify for (with just over half the qualifying spots up for grabs compared to the Euros) and SK gets at least a full campaign in with the U-21's instead of leaving them in the lurch at the business end of the campaign with a possible play-off still to come. It's a win-win for all concerned surely.

tough group especially given that only the 9 group winners automatically qualify, and the 2 best runners up go into playoff for the last spot

I didn't realise that he might leave the u21s when the decision was made at first. Seems mad that they might be qualified and he would leave them before the last game and with the chance to manage them in the tournament. Surely he would just double job if possible?

I don't think it's as tough a group as the Irish media claimed yesterday. Both Sweden and Iceland failed to qualify for the under 21 finals in 2019 (like ourselves). As a fourth seed, it would be a tough enough group anyway, no matter who we were playing.

Trying to get us into the Toulon tournament next summer, which would be a brilliant move.
Would be interesting to see the number of underage games we play in comparison to other nations - particularly England. This was one area that they've focused on hugely in the last few years and ensured they have presence at every age grade. Under 20 being a case in point, something we just don't bother with.
