3rd in the group gets you a playoff for the Euros. That's a realistic route, it's how we got there in 2016, and it's certainly more realistic than having to win the NL group.

And what did you get for coming 3rd in your qualifying group for Euro 2020?( technical euro 2021?)

No it doesn't.

There's 24 slots and the Germans have one sewn up as hosts.

There's 10 groups, and the top 2 from each qualify, so that's 21 spaces occupied straight away.

The final 3 spots come from the playoffs, which 12 teams will enter via the NL.
This is our likely route and it's a rocky road as it will conatin decent teams and only 3 from 12 advance, so if we do go in here, it's a bloodbath.

EDIT
To add, and I am open to correction....there's 32 teams in the top two Nations Leagues.
And there's 32 teams gonna either qualify direct or get to the playoffs so, in theory, every team in the top two NL groups should at least get a playoff if all goes to form.
Issues arise when some teams from NL3 come top-2 in their qualifying group, so taking up a Top 2 NL team space.
Maybe someone can better clarify this?

There’s a playoff for each division. Assuming all the First division teams qualify, we should be in the playoffs. Think Iceland were the only 1 to not qualify from the top division last time out.

Edit - Just realised that there’s 4 more teams in the top two leagues this time around. Would probably need to finish second to guarantee a playoff.

The draw isn't until next October after the NL has concluded. We could be 2nd, 3rd or 4th seeds pending how we get on in our games next year.

Well we are the 25th highest ranked European team on the FIFA world rankings. Take. Germany out of that equation as hosts and we are. 24th. So realistically we need to move ahead of a few like Romania, Slovakia,  Hungary and Scotland.
time is the stuff that life is made of, don't waste it.

Does the NL not determine the seedings?
Think I read that if we won the NL group, we'd be 2nd seeds for the Euros.  I may be making this up, but adds up based on SK's ambitions also.

Lets' hope we get more clarity on this after the draw in two weeks.

I haven’t seen the rankings but we just narrowly missed out on being second seeds to Serbia for WC qualifying.
And we can only have gone backward since.

To get ahead of those team you mentioned we would probably need to win half our nations league games.

How bad would we have to do on NL to drop to 4th seeds?

there will always be teams falling behind us and going ahead of us in fifa rankings. if we qualify directly for euro 2024 we’ll have a very good chance of been in the top 2 pots for WC 2026. End up in the playoffs and it’s probably pot 3.

Four of those playoff places are held back for teams in League C, so those places are not open to us. So it's 20 automatic places and 8 playoff places potentially available to Leagues A and B (plus a guaranteed space for Germany). But that's only if every one of the 20 automatic qualifiers come from leagues A and B. In reality there's usually a couple of automatic qualifiers from the C division.

Basically if we come top 2 in the Nations League group we will get a playoff place. If we come fourth the group we almost certainly won't. If we come third in the group we will need to wait on results of other teams in the main qualifying groups to see if we scrape into the playoffs.

Sounds like he is getting the two years. The right decision in the circumstances I think, either back him or don't back him rather than kicking the can to next summer. There was enough improvement in the last two windows to warrant a proper contract extension.

"Comments from the floor that results are more important than style of play".

Hill backed him though pointing to the change in personal and improved results thereafter. Good to see Hill has a bit of realism and sense

He is also on the same page with him regarding a "development squad" which is good to see. The majority can see what he is trying to do as far as developing the team, now we just need to kick on with good performances and get the results.
