Kenny could do himself a favour by getting Andrews to do some of the media commitments. He's clearly trained in dealing with the media from his punditry work, something that Kenny is lacking in.

Agreed, he's very polished in what he's saying imo even if you don't agree with any of it you can't deny he's clear and confident in what he's saying. Kenny can sometimes ramble a little which I don't think helps him in getting his message across, at least with the media.

Yeah. You can see, and I'm not having a cut here, years of UK media exposure and training in him, players get it too so they don't drop clangers when interviewed. Plus as you say, his punditry experience. Maybe something LOI produced players and management wouldn't have the benefit of.

Still in denial, I'll repost this hereunder, just so we are clear - I'm not making excuses for Kenny, but this simplistic we should be beating Luxembourg just because historically we have been better than them is nonsense. In our last extended squad (30 if you include withdrawals/call ups etc), we had 2 first choice PL players (Coleman is now out injured also and Duffy was languishing at Celtic when we played Luxembourg). We also had 6 L1 players and 2 LOI players leaving aside the large numbers who are not first choice at their PL/Championship clubs - I'm not going through them in detail, but lads like Long, Molumby, Browne, Hendrick, Christie, Idah, Omabamidele, Doherty, Connolly, Kelleher etc are barely getting a game these days.

Thill, referred to hereunder scored the winner in the Bernabeu last night. You can also throw in to the mix that their captain 21yo Leandro Barreiro 29 Intl Caps, 1 Intl Goal plays for Mainz who are currently 6th in the Bundesliga.

Also, I did a bit of research just for all the lads who think we should be beating Luxembourg home and away, just because you know, history and all that. Their 3 key players are Seb Thill (27yo MF 38 caps - 3 goals)  who played 90 mins for Sheriff Tiraspol in their CL Group Stage victory over Shakhtar yesterday, Christopher Martins (24yo MF 46 caps- 1 goal) who played very well (I watched the game) in Young Boys 2-1 CL victory over Man United on Tuesday and Gerson Rodrigues (26yo MF/FW - 38 caps - 8 goals) who scored 7 in 38 (inc 2 in CL) for a Dinamo Kiev side who won the domestic double last season. He is now on loan at Troyes in Ligue Un.

Their keeper (42 caps) plays in the top flight in Belgium (as does our own Josh Cullen), while they have others playing in the top flights in Germany, Holland, Austria, the Ukraine (including Thill's younger brother) and one in the English Championship (squad player at Huddersfield)

I dont know whether its football snobbery or whether lads dont think football exists outside of England, but there's no reason on paper why we should automatically be beating such a team. Their players have a solid core of experience with 2 or 3 top quality players (arguably at a higher level than ours), while we have a very young team made up of a hotchpotch of PL squad players, and lads playing in the Championship, SPL and League One. Their FA has also been instrumental in putting together youth development programmes etc while our own has gone bust.

This is not an attempt to make excuses for Kenny but some lads need a serious injection of realism as regards where our squad is at currently - the rest of Europe e.g. Iceland, Luxembourg etc have been quietly progressing for quite some time, while we have been going backwards. It's time to arrest that slide and imo an old school pragmatic manager such as Hughton just isnt going to cut it any more. We might as well just have stuck with Mc Carthy if thats where we are going next.

Good honest interview there with Keith. I really hope results improve soon to get this team and management moving in a more positive way as I’d hate to lose this in depth diligence and real desire that this management team bring and are trying to implement to make it work for Irish football going forward

Hear hear! Keith, as noted by others is an impressive media performer unlike Kenny, but there was a real honesty and depth to that interview and a noticeable lack of bullsh*t. Let's hope they can get the results over the next 6 weeks or so and we can all then look forward with a bit of optimism.

We still should be beating Luxembourg at home.

Young boys beating United at home, they had an extra player for nearly 70 mins - United will beat them at home and finish ahead of them in the group. Still a great result for YB.

Super goal by Thill last night - obviously a decent player.
Gerson who scored the winning goal, doesn't get his game for Troyes who are 4th bottom of the French league.

Moris - Union Saint-Gilloise
Gracia - Wien
Chanot - NYC
Mahmutovic - Liev
Jans - Rotterdam

Barreiro - Mainz
Thill - Vorskla Poltava
Thill - Sherriff
Gerson - Troyes

Sinani - Huddersfield

When you look at that line up, at home, you should be confident but not complacent of getting 3 points.

The Portugal away game (if we got the referee that we got against Serbia at home) - we win the game.

No matter who you are playing at home, you should be looking to win those games.

Of course we should be looking to win these games, that's not my point. The point is that man for man on paper there is no automatic reason why we should be beating them (in years gone by there would have been). You left out Martins-Pereira btw, but just by way of comparison noting Coleman and O'Shea are currently injured, O'Shea long term. Further analysis of the ages/number of caps etc would swing Luxembourg's way imo.

Moris - Union Saint-Gilloise (BELGIUM 1) - BAZUNU - (ENGLAND 3)
Gracia - Wien (AUSTRIA 1) - COLEMAN - (EPL)
Chanot - NYC (MLS) - DOHERTY - (EPL RESERVE)
Mahmutovic - Liev (UKRAINE 1) - EGAN (ENGLAND 2)
Jans - Rotterdam (DUTCH 1) - DUFFY (EPL)
Barreiro - Mainz (BUNDESLIGA) - O'SHEA (ENGLAND 2)
Thill - Vorskla Poltava (UKRAINE 1) - CULLEN (BELGIUM 1)
Thill - Sherriff (PERPETUAL MOLDOVAN CHAMPIONS - CL GROUP STAGES - HENDRICK - (EPL RESERVE)
Gerson - Troyes (LIGUE UN - WON DOUBLE LAST SEASON WITH DINAMO KIEV) - KNIGHT (ENGLAND 2)
Martins-Pereira - Young Boys (SWISS 1, CURRENT CHAMPIONS - CL GROUP STAGES) - CONNOLLY (EPL RESERVE)
Sinani - Huddersfield (ENGLAND 2 SQD PLAYER) - ROBINSON - (ENGLAND 2)

Btw Gerson Rodrigues has all the look of a lad who is being eased in to the team (may have been injured). He started their last game. he is an attacking midfielder - 3 starts, 1 sub app this season, 1 goal 267 minutes. As detailed previously he was a big member of the team that won the Ukrainina double last season and played in the CL. Newcastle are 4th from bottom of the PL and Hendrick hasnt had a minute in the team since the last international break.

Of course we should looking to beat lower seeded teams at home and definitely not lose. But you still have to do your stuff. You can get away with it against really poor sides like we did against Gibraltar last time out and have done through the years in other games as well but you won't get away with it with teams that are just under your level. Man to man, i do still think Ireland are better than Lux and Azerbaijan. But there is not that big of a difference that it's an absolute shock if they get a result against us. They've got results off bigger teams than us in recent years.

Obviously those two results are the biggest red mark against Kenny's name. Of course against Lux there were some mitigating factors (no fans a big one) but we just didn't turn up and do the business. Against Az, we created enough chances to win but maybe didn't believe in ourselves enough.
Against Serbia and Portugal, we were competitive and maybe deserved more.

I'm prepared to look past the NL because it was a crazy set of circumstances. Turning some of those draws like against Bulgaria or Wales into wins I don't really changes where we are as a team now in terms of direction we are going, it's just a more positive stat and ratio people keep throwing up would look better. These qualifiers are what it's all about and we should have a better idea where we stand after a second chances against Lux and Az who are teams we should be beating on paper. Obviously Portugal will always be a hard one so you just look for a good performance in that one.

The Championship is a stronger league than most European leagues such as Belgium, Norway, possibly even Holland now.

If Luxembourg are any good they wouldn't be ranked where they are or the results they have gotten over the last 2 years.

We should be beating them. Simple as that.  Anyone arguing otherwise is a radicalised Kenny cult member.

We have an embarrassment of riches ourselves.  Champions League stalwarts Anto Stokes, Cillian Sheridan, Darron Gibson, Caoimhin Kelleher all surplus to requirements with the EIRE
