Fully agree with dunne. Getting teenagers into the squad gives it a boost, especially if exciting players. Been years since we have really did that. Most of our players have been into their 20’s by the time they get a first start.
That would be a good stat to see. Age of debut for all Irish players in the last 10 years. Any YBIG nerd want to have a go?
And sure Dunne found it hard to keep the weight off when he was an active player Edited by t_rAndy - 23 Jul 2019 at 4:32pm |

A precocious, 17-year old, goalscoring Dubliner getting capped by Mick McCarthy?
Would never happen. |

I remember looking it up before, Rice was out last 19 year old, before him it was McCarthy in 2010, with a handful like Stokes, Long and Cunningham before that. Our last 18 year old McGeady in 2004 and before him it was Damien Duff in 1998. Robbie Keane was our last 17 year old.

Forgot about him, I took it from my original post before he'd made his debut. Still fairly mad hes only the 3rd 18 year old in 20 years!

I would think given our so called limited capabilities we should be giving young lads with a sight of talent a chance. This is down to the last 3 or 4 managers approach of not calling up players unless they are playing for the clubs in at least championship level or above (for a majority of the last 10-20 years). I think there are flaws to that concept. Kenny is saying all the right things and looking forward to seeing what happens when he steps up

Dunne is well placed to provide an opinion on this matter. If I recall correctly, McCarthy called Dunne up as a 17-year old for the away qualifier against Romania in 1997. Although it was another few years before Dunne made his debut, it showed that McCarthy was willing to get talented young players involved at an early age. That was further evidenced the following year when Robbie and Duff made their debuts as teenagers.

Mick has shown time and time again at international and club level that if you're good enough, you're old enough. - Parrott (if as expected he kicks on and is at least on the bench for a few games at Spurs), and - Aaron Connolly, whose performances in Toulon were outstanding and clearly senior level - well able to take on the new Barca right back - reminiscent of Duff in Malaysia over 20 years ago. Connolly should get a good loan now - maybe to Germany, seems to be a route for the higher level PL2 players (Ampadu, Lookman, Nelson, etc). Too good to be playing PL2 level now. Wouldn't be surprised to see him come on for against the Swiss for the final 15 min. They could be surprised by his direct, running style - while he has it, at least until he has it coached out of him. If so, will pul the rug out from Kenny a little bit who has built a nice little U21 squad for the Euro qualifiers.

Not an unexpected answer. Seems to be saying that if Parrott is still with Spurs at the end of the transfer window, he has a chance of breaking into the first team. I guess he would hardly say the opposite that he had no chance of breaking into the first team... Does the "we’ll see what happens at the end of the transfer window" potentially indicate that Parrott might go out on loan this season?
