It would seem so but then the question is why did he?

I think that might be explained by Martin Breheny in today's Indo.

I don't recall the opposition to the game going public.  However I understand it was pretty bitter.  I was under the original impression that the main opposition came from a long way north of Cork however it appears there were local divisions as well.

Now there had been rumblings that Munster could play big rugby matches in PuC.  Cork City came very close to drawing Celtic last year.  As it stands the ground remains closed.

Breheny is very close to GAA HQ.  They clearly want to open up PuC and possibly other grounds as it could be very lucrative for them.  So I reckon this is Ryan's way of getting it through congress.

I think this is a message to Duffer's dinosaurs.

1)  Cork clubs will pay dearly if the ground is not opened up.
2)  Other parts of the GAA could also be impacted due to the costs involved.

The level of outrage against the GAA on this thread is laughable. Completely disregarding the views of the organisation asked to host the game. I was criticised for describing the game a s a posthumous testimonial and then the official match programme for the game confirms it as a testimonial.

Hosting the game was the right thing to do and the GAA should be applauded for it. They had their process to work through and Damien Duff displayed his own ignorance with his comments. Seems all people want nowadays is to be outraged and play the victim.

Bollox.  The GAA should have given permission straight away without as much as a bat of an eye.  The mere fact that they have a ban on ''foreign sports''  or more accurately ''English sports'' just shows them up for the narrow minded xenophobic arseholes they are.  They have to have draconian measures to keep a stranglehold on their flock.  They have no problem having boxing or American Football played on their turf.  The GAA can fook off.  Archaic organisation.  Dev's backward idealistic Ireland.  Fianna Fail, the GAA and the Catholic Church.  Let the bishop throw the ball in and we'll have comely maidens dancing at half time.

As for applauding the GAA for allowing it to be played!  You having a laugh!  You might as well applaud a man for not running down dogs on purpose.  Normal decency shouldn't be applauded. It should be expected.

Again; they have a process for facilitating other sports; including American football which your conveniently ignoring. By your logic; they should do what you want. They have no obligation to facilitate any events other than their own. Your references to Fianna Fail and the Church are laughable and an indication of the weakness of your own argument.

The last boxing events to take place in GAA stadiums were in 1995 and 1972. You don't appear to be aware that football and rugby have been played on GAA pitches far more recently.

As for being archaic; you might want to do a bit of research on where the GAA is in terms of corporate governance, financial transparency and youth development and benchmark that against other national sporting organisations in this country like the OCI, FAI or IABA. Some other recommend reading would be the abolition of rules 21 and 27. You could also compare and contrast the GAA's relationship with the GPA and CPA versus the FAI's relationship with the PFAI.

The bit in bold only highlights the bigotry of the organisation. It wasn't 'no foreign sports', it was 'no sports we might have to compete with, or have a history with those bastards in England'. A bit like that great, great Gael: Garth 'Brian Boru' Brooks. Not to mention any other talentless flute they will let on their sacred soil, as long as it makes them money.
Given the amount of government funding the GAA has got, the fact there was even a debate about opening the grounds was embarrassing to Ireland as a whole. As was the Liam Miller debacle and, in my opinion, is the GAA as a whole. They have deep principles that seem intrinsically linked to their deep pockets.
As for rules 21 and 27, that is just laughable! The GAA should of course be applauded for getting rid of the bigoted, backwards rules they created! I believe Saudi Arabia are being praised for allowing women to drive too.
Lastly, I am no defender of the FAI, and know little about the GPA, although it appears there are complaints every year,  but the PFAI represents professional and semi-professional athletes and not amateurs and 'shamateurs'. It is not a like for like comparison.

Is there any other sports organisation in the world that has a ban on other sports being played in their stadiums?  I can't think of any unless there is some sport I can't think of played in some backward dictatorship regime.

There's football being played in baseball stadiums currently.
American football being played in Wembley and soon Tottenham football stadiums
Hurling matches in baseball stadiums and AFL stadiums in Australia
GAA was played at Wembley in the past

Do you know what?  The rest of these sports should do what the GAA do and ban Gaelic Games from their hallowed turf.   Ban hurling in Boston and Australia.  Let them build their own stadiums there to showcase their sport once a year to the Irish immigrants.

Just shows the hypocrisy of the GAA. They want to go to football stadiums like Wembley and play there but wouldn't allow football to be played in their ground until 2007 under a huge fuss and debate!  The ''forward modern thinking organisation'' that came of age in the 21st century (temporarily) and has firmly gone back into the 19th century again.

The way they try to defend themselves to the media would make you laugh.  ''Lads we can't break our own rules'' as if their hands are tied and would love to help only they can't.  Aww.  These are the people that made up their backward rules in the first place!

The KKK has just announced that they would like to stop hanging blacks but it's against their constitution and would have to go to congress.  The next scheduled congress is in 2 yrs time in Mississippi.

I can understand people saying they hate the GAA and would never follow or support the sports. But many of these same people hate the FAI yet will still follow the sport they govern. They are both backwards in different ways but it's hypocritical supporting one over the other.

I don't hate gaelic games (played for school and club) and attended a good few games but many of their governance are narrow minded Little Irelanders caught in a time warp.  My teacher in school who ran the team was a little bigot who despised 'soccer'.  Does that mean the GAA can manage their finances well at the same time? Of course.  But they are still gobsh*tes.  Are the FAI gobsh*tes?  Yes. Absof**kinglutely and less professional.  Football is just a better sport.  GAA like rugby is just too small a pond to hold my interest.

That fool who came out and said the GAA were bullied can fook off.  What an utter arse he has made of himself with those comments.   The truth is the GAA had to be shamed into it because they were so bloody backward and narrow minded to gracefully allow the game to go ahead.  Eventually they did it with a grudge and with conditions (playing GAA at half time and possibly taking a financial cut-IDK).  they then want a public pat on the back and then claim they were bullied into it beasically saying they actually didn't want to host the game.  Alll for a charitable cause in tragic circumstances.  The GAA can fook off.

The FAI aren’t football and they don’t govern football. The same can’t be said of the GAA.

Who govern it in Ireland then? The GAA don't govern the entire sport here either. The LFGA govern the ladies side and that organisation seem quite a progressive bunch compared to your average governing body on this island.

Female sporting organisations have no choice to be progressive due to the fact that they're trying to break through societal perceptions, etc.
