The world cup final won't be that interesting because England aren't in it? LOL

They will most likely never make another final unless they start to pass the ball properly in midfield. Something they haven't done for decades. They did almost make the final this time by having the easiest draw anyone can ever remember.Even with that they still failed in the end. Southgate now needs to get players similar to Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Wilshere in midfield who don't share that pairs injury and other problems.Only then will they have the chance to actually live up to the hype.

Fully agree with this sentiment. I'm sure the build up to an England final would have been....interesting, however it's hard to argue with Croatia vs France being a much better proposition for the neutral than England vs France.

Some amount of children of this site. Wanting England to lose, hating England, certain posters commenting on the whole English population and giving an opinion on an entire nation. The majority on here follow a British club and a certain percentage on here would go to games in Britain and spend money helping the British economy. Ye have no problem hating the English football team yet ye have no problem supporting English clubs. I presume ye realise that the English nation would get some laugh out of reading comments posted on here about them.

There's a million more examples like the above in many different sports. It's not enough your own team does well, your rivals must suffer!
As an Irishman, I don't consider England a rival at all.

I don't consider any international team as a "rival".

Some of us don't buy into the cliched bullsh*t which is heaped upon normal people by the self-proclaimed called "best fans in the wuddled".

The reality is that the final is now being contested between two low profile, uninteresting teams who the vast majority of people have no particular interest in, and the general worldwide interest in the final has declined significantly.

Had England been involved, the interest and the hype throughout the world would have been massive - because they are BOX OFFICE.

ENGLAND are BOXOFFICE  !!!, this is the world cup final sid, its not a sky Monday night hype up game.... , france are low profile..!!!
THE WORLD CUP FINAL is the biggest sporting event in the world
The World Cup final may be the biggest sporting event in the world, but it's not immune from a drop off in interest because of the pairing, no more so than the Champions League final or the Superbowl is.

This is certainly such a final. France v Croatia is traditionally a pairing much more befitting of a last 16 tie in European Championship.

France v England would have been a classic pairing - two of the great powers of the game and a fascinating historical/geopolitical backdrop.

France v Croatia is the equivalent of Inter Milan v Bayer Leverkusen in a Champions League final. You might watch it because its a final. if it wasn't, you might well give it a miss.

Most people will probably still watch purely on the basis of it being a World Cup final, but not with any great enthusiasm.

Irish people tuned in in their droves on Wednesday night to see England play. It attracted a higher television rating than the Eire v Denmark game - and that's just on RTE. Many Irish people would have tuned in on ITV too.

When you factor in the interest in the six counties on top of that which wouldn't have been there for the Eire v Denmark game, you're probably talking about close to double the viewership on the island of Ireland.

One of Ireland's national broadcasters actually covers all England home games live.  And now it turns out that Irish people are more interested in England than they are in Eire.

We can say one thing with absolute certainty: England are BOX OFFICE, more BOX OFFICE than anybody.

There was no hype
Southgate said they did better than any of them realistically thought possible

Every pundit pre tournament said the quarter finals would be a fantastic achievement win this squad

One only has to look at this forum to see where the real interest lies.

Along with this thread, a whopping 28 pager, England's third place play off against Belgium is top of the pile.

The thread for the final is, as I write, down in seventh place, with a measly page and a bit of posts.

France v Belgium, the suposedly "more attractive" semi-final, was a bore and attracted just six pages of posts.

Love them or hate them, you can never ignore England.

Even when they are beaten, it's all Irish people want to talk about.

I've no doubt that on Sunday evening, when the final is done and dusted, England will still be the primary topic of conversation here.

Different types of players, one sits in the base of a midfield and the other is best as a number 10. Both are world class.
England lack both types of players and have done for years. Probably since Paul Scholes and they didn’t know how to use him right

Correct. England have rarely had a technically gifted central midfield player, when they have had them, like Scholes, Gascoigne or Hoddle, they haven't got the best out of them, either by playing them out of position or not playing them at all.

The first effort he could have passed to sterling, a better shot or a simple dummy and it was a certain goal.

The follow up was from a tight angle with a player on the line and a GK coming at him. From that angle with a player on the line he only had a small space to get the ball in.

In the end he hit the post and off the keeper

It definitely wasn’t an open goal.
