Money.  Keep as many big television audiences apart for as long as possible.

Is literally the right answer. This isn't PM being a conspiracy theorist (for a change Wink). It is actually the right answer.

UEFA are money grubbing arseholes and the longer they can keep sides from the same country apart, the longer they will, because filthy, filthy lucre.

The top 4 teams from England, Spain, Italy and Germany are through to the group stages.
That’s 50% of teams from 4 leagues.

They are very close to hand picking the teams they want in the competition.

Hope Ajax, Lyon and Porto do well this year.

Fed up with the same 4/6 teams in the semis.

If they do well,  they will find a way of removing them for next year.

No they aren't
If they were that would be 16 teams.

They'll lose their best 2/3 players to the richer clubs like they always do.
Deals already being negotiated for De Jong and de Ligt.

As much as I hate the ****s, it's incredibly sad. All the fun and unpredictability has been sucked out of football.

I blame the fall of the Berlin Wall.
No more 'crack' Eastern European teams with their dodgy haircuts, dodgy food and dodgier refs.

16 of the 32 teams in the group stages are from those 4 leagues.
No play-offs required.

Problem is, though, if you eg halved the number of teams from those four countries, the eight teams replacing them would be likely to be sub-AEK Athens standard i.e. pointless (both literally and figuratively).

Which would make a mockery of a competition with group stages, since with the top one or two teams in each group virtually certain to go through, most the games would be meaningless and/or completely one-sided.

And if you went back to the old (FA Cup-style) European Cup, you could get the two top teams in the tournament meeting in an early knockout round, thereby making it more of a lottery.

Of course, the present system of seeding etc by UEFA is transparently chosen to get as many "big" teams (in TV terms) on board as possible, and then guarantee them as many games as possible.

But if UEFA doesn't indulge them to some extent, then they'll just breakaway, and then you'll be left with the situation eg in Darts, where the "Superleague" (PDC) has all the top players and UEFA (BDO) is left with the second raters.

And UEFA already has enough trouble supporting its second raters in the Europa League as it is.

I reckon the next step will be to move Champions League to weekends, they obviously realise it's the best for viewing figures (by moving the final to Saturdays).

You'd have the Champions League teams then playing their Premier League games on Wednesdays.

Not a fan of it, but it's where I think it will go

It won’t be the champions league if it moves to a Sat. That would cause too much disruption to the domestic leagues.

If it does happen it will be a new European league.

Am I right in saying if you topped your group that you will play away from home in the first leg?
