With a month to go and squads starting to be announced
I thought it would be an idea to start threads for the World Cup. I've put
together a guide to all the teams and these threads can then be used to discuss
any further developments and of course the games:
Group C FRANCE Schedule Team Overviews France FIFA ranking: 7th Star Player: Antoine Griezmann top scorer at Euro 2016 and one of the most lethal finishers in the game, has formed a great partnership upfront with Giroud for the French WC History: Champions on home soil in 98, Runners up in 2006 and two 3rd place finishes for the French. Odds: 6-1 Synopsis: Despite dropping points to Belarus, Sweden and Luxembourg they never looked in any real danger of missing out. Almost repeated their 1984 and 1998 home heroics at the Euros two years ago and with an array of young talent to call upon this could well be another successful campaign for Les Bleus. I’d expect them to top their group a potential Last 16 vs Croatia/Argentina could go either way but as I pointed out if it clicks for them they could well add to trophy cabinet in Squad: Goalkeepers: Alphone Areola (Paris St Germain), Hugo Lloris (Tottenham Hotspur), Steve Mandanda (Olympique de Marseille) Defenders: Lucas Hernandez (Atletico Madrid), Presnel Kimpembe (Paris St Germain), Benjamin Pavard (VfB Stuttgart), Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City), Djibril Sidibe (Monaco), Adil Rami (Olympique de Marseille), Samuel Umtiti (Barcelona), Raphael Varane (Real Madrid) Midfielders: Blaise Matuidi (Juventus), N'Golo Kante (Chelsea), Steven N'Zonzi (Sevilla), Paul Pogba (Manchester United), Corentin Tolisso (Bayern Munich) Forwards: Olivier Giroud (Chelsea), Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid), Kylian Mbappe (Paris St Germain), Thomas Lemar (Monaco), Nabil Fekir (Olympique Lyonnais), Florian Thauvin (Olympique de Marseille), Ousmane Dembele (Barcelona)
Australia FIFA ranking: 40th Star Player: Despite being 38 and currently side-lined by injury Tim Cahill is still the main man for the Aussies and one they will hope will be fit for the summer. Outside of him Mile Jedinak made a massive difference for them during qualifying. WC History: a last 16 place in 2006 is their best showing Odds: 275-1 Synopsis: Had to come through the playoffs after basically drawing their way through the 3rd Asian phase. Needed extra time to see off a spirited Syrian side before a 3-1 Jedinak inspired over Honduras seen them qualify. It’s a tricky group for them France will most likely top the group but it may well be a straight shootout between the other 3 teams to finish runner up but if they do a Last 16 against Argentina/Croatia may be as far as they go. Squad: Goalkeepers - Mat Ryan (Brighton), Danny Vukovic (Genk), Brad Jones (Feyenoord) Defenders - Aziz Behich (Bursaspor), Milos Degenek (Yokohama F. Marinos), Matthew Jurman (Suwon Bluewings), James Meredith (Millwall), Josh Risdon (Western Sydney), Trent Sainsbury (Grasshoppers Zurich) Midfielders - Mile Jedinak (Aston Villa), Jackson Irvine (Hull), Robbie Kruse (Bochum), Massimo Luongo (Queens Park Rangers), Mark Milligan (Al Ahli), Aaron Mooy (Huddersfield), Tom Rogic (Celtic) Forwards - Tim Cahill (Millwall), Tomi Juric (FC Luzern), Matthew Leckie (Hertha Berlin), Andrew Nabbout (Urawa Red Diamonds), Dimitri Petratos (Newcastle Jets), Daniel Arzani (Melbourne City), Jamie Maclaren (Hibernian)
Peru FIFA ranking: 11th Star Player: Edison Flores was their stand out player in qualifying with 5 goals, Paolo Guerrero’s ban will expire just before the start of the tournament and he could also be very important for them.(EDIT AGAIN Ban has now been rescinded so he will play in the tournament) WC History: 1970 Quarter final is their best finish this will be their first WC since 1982 Odds: 200-1 Synopsis: Finished ahead of Chile on goal difference to qualify for the playoffs against New Zealand were a 2-0 win in Lima seen them through to Russia. As pointed out with Australia it be a straight shootout between the other 3 teams to finish runner up but if they do a Last 16 against Argentina/Croatia may be as far as they go. Squad: Goalkeepers: Pedro Gallese (Veracruz-MEX), Carlos Caceda (Veracruz-MEX), Jose Carvallo (UTC) Defenders: Aldo Corzo (Universitario), Luis Advincula (Lobos Buap), Christian Ramos (Veracruz), Miguel Araujo (Alianza Lima), Alberto Rodriguez (Atletico Junior), Anderson Santamaria (Puebla), Miguel Trauco (Flamengo), Nilson Loyola (Melgar) Midfielders: Renato Tapia (Feyenoord), Pedro Aquino (Lobos Buap), Yoshimar Yotun (Orlando City), Paolo Hurtado (Vitoria Guimaraes), Christian Cueva (Sao Paulo), Edison Flores (Aalborg), Andy Polo (Portland Timbers), Wilder Cartagena (Veracruz) Forwards: Andre Carrillo (Watford), Raul Ruidiaz (Morelia), Jefferson Farfan (Lokomotiv Moscow), Paolo Guerrero (Flamengo)
Denmark FIFA ranking: 12th Star Player: Christian Eriksen- the man who makes them tick, as if given space (as we found out) can really hurt teams. WC History: Quarter final stage in 98 is their best showing Odds: 80-1 Synopsis: I think we all know how they qualified so we won’t go over that again. I'd rate them as the team most likely to come out on top of that 3 way battle for 2nd place but again a Last 16 against Argentina/Croatia may be as far as they go.
Squad: Goalkeepers: Frederik Ronnow (Brondby), Jonas Lossl (Huddersfield), Kasper Schmeichel (Leicester). Defenders: Andreas Christensen (Chelsea), Henrik Dalsgaard (Brentford), Jannik Vestergaard (Borussia Monchengladbach), Jens Stryger Larsen (Udinese), Jonas Knudsen (Ipswich), Mathias Jorgensen (Huddersfield), Simon Kjaer (Sevilla). Midfielders: Christian Eriksen (Tottenham), Lasse Schone (Ajax), Lukas Lerager (Bordeaux), Michael Krohn-Dehli (Deportivo La Coruna), Thomas Delaney (Werder Bremen), Willian Kvist (FC Copenhagen). Forwards: Andreas Cornelius (Atalanta), Kasper Dolberg (Ajax), Martin Braithwaite (Bordeaux), Nicolai Jorgensen (Feyenoord), Pione Sisto (Celta Vigo), Viktor Fischer (FC Copenhagen), Yussuf Yurary Poulsen (RB Leipzig). Paolo Guerrero's ban is upheld so he won't be there. Apparently the cocaine was in his tea

Rabiot, Digne, Coman (if fit) and laporte should all definitely be in that squad.

A nice gesture and show of support by French, Danes and Aussies. Doubt it will make a difference though |

Listening to OTB with Tim Vickery and it seems to be a joke that he has been banned.

How many teams could leave out players like Benzema and Lacazette. They could probably pick a team not in the squad that would be better than half the teams going to the World Cup.

--------------------Costil---------------- Digne----Zouma---Sakho--Debuchy Martial---Rabiot---Sissoko----Coman ----------Lacazette----Ben Yedder---- that's a starting XI made up of players who were in their initial Preliminary Squad Obviously that doesn't include other players like Benzema and Laporte, Kurzawa would also have been another left back option there |

I see Rabiot has asked to be taken off the standby list as he's said he won't be keeping his fitness up

Don't really get why Rabiot is rated myself. Very average player. Has some good games where he runs likes a demon and looks great. Other games when the pace is slow, I don't think he's that good technically or that good a passer.
|
|||
"I called him an embarrassment to FIFA and to himself," .... He said 'No-one speaks to me like that'.... and I said, "well I do' and that was that."
