I think what proved the point is the consistency of the poor and toothless performances. We have to go back to Vienna in 2016 to remember any sort of attacking flair and beyond that we have ridden our luck, to the point that it nearly ran out, and then it did. I would also argue that the decisions at half time against Denmark should a considered a serious lack of foresight. As opposed to taking out Christie and Ward, and pushing Brady and Meyler back, while bringing Wes on for the midfield and Long up front with Murphy, he took out Arter and Meyler, and created a midfield of Hendrick, McGeady, McClean and Wes, which was too light weight, and was going to lack to tough edge to anchor the central play in midfield.
Poor squads will be poor, but poor management will make poor players even more exposed, and can detrimentally effect good players. Wales' lack of true ambition in Dublin cost them against a patchwork Irish team which had grit and experience, but little else, and Coleman ought to answer for that. By playing the type of hoofball we are playing we are riding our luck in a manner that Trapp and Jackie Charlton wouldn't have contemplated. The latter liked the high line and the advanced midfielder. Trapp played to a rigid system, which eventually ran out of road, but was initially successful. MON seems to have lost faith in the style of system he played between 2013-2016 and he is now doubling down on the system which got us points against Wales and kept us in the hunt for the WC until half time against Denmark. One might say those are results worth trying to replicate, but now it's becoming harder and harder to believe that international opposition will fear route one football with grit.

It's not even about the quality of our players the likes of seani Maquire could get 120 caps but playing in a system where we create a shot on target every 2 to 3 games he's going to struggle with goals. You could have Ronaldo up front for us and he wouldn't have got a sniff in our last 2 games. All our underage teams are now set up to play in a particular way and are at least competitive, why is this style then disregarded for MONS team?

We are going to see a repeat of Trapattoni and McCarthy's final campaigns. The Denmark result wa s O'Neill's natural end, but of course the FAI are doomed to repeat their mistakes. We can argue all day about the quality of our players, but at the end of the day O'Neill is not making anywhere near enough of the tools at his disposal, and this fact has been evident for quite some time.

+1 Unlike the end of those tenures, at least we have the safety net of the nations league. It will be obvious before Christmas whether O'Neill has turned things around. FAI have too much at stake with Euro2020 on home soil.

O Neill deserves a 20 year extension if he turns this ship around.
This has been going on for two years and definitely didnt start on Monday night as some would have you think in using it to defend him. We completed 94 passes in Belgrade in the first qualifier, robbed 2 points from Georgia at home when they hit the bar with 37% possession and fewer shots on target (at home!!!), really struggled to break down Moldova in Chisinau until McClean's brace. Yes, points on the board and all that is fine but the warning signs were there then, and they are now beyond repair. No chance the FAI are buying O' Neill out of a 2 million quid a year contract so unless he gets a club role we will be watching Iceland and Norway in Dublin. If we were heading to Russia next week, it would have gone similarly to Euro 2012. obviously not as bad with weaker opposition but we wouldn't beat Panama or Saudi Arabia these days.

Completely agree & have been saying the same over the last 18/24 months. I get why some are slow or don’t want to slate the manager but How anybody can argue that O Neill is the right man to bring us forward is completely beyond me. |

It was a brutal performance. I can understand O'Neill being defensive and cautious against a top class side in an away friendly as this is exactly how he would approach a competitive game. Unfortunately, this strategy hasn't been working for us of late. We are literally just inviting pressure for the entire game. It's leaving our players tired and demoralised.
I feel the only solution is to try and get on the ball and retain possession. We don't need to go gung-ho with an all out attack but we need to try and pass the ball, relieve the constant pressure and try and build from there. We seem to be devoid of any strategy at the moment. We're not even a long ball team anymore. To play a long ball game you need to play a relatively high line and we haven't been able to do this. We would arguably have some success with this strategy if we played a player suited to that type of game like Cillian Sheridan but O'Neill won't pick him. It hasn't helped that our strikers have suffered from a massive dip in form but a manager needs to react to that dip in form by reviewing playing style, personnel etc but it looks like we're just muddling along hoping that our form will suddenly change while maintaining the same rudderless approach. The only positive I took from the game was that the approach was shown up so badly it will have to change but O'Neill's comments after the game suggest otherwise. We are destined to finish bottom of Nations League if we continue like this and could potentially loose all 4 games.

Our last 10 games going back to the 0-0 with Wales when they had 10 men for 20 mins.
We have W2 D4 L4 F6 A11 The only game we scored 2 goals was against Moldova at home. We need a win against the USA just to give everybody a lift.

The alarm bells have been ringing since those heady days of the Euros. Apart from a decent performance in that win in Vienna, our performances would have put a pub team to shame. It's alarming just how far backwards we've gone in that time and there's no sign of it improving any time soon. Another performance like that in this Saturday's game against USA (a team we beat 4-1 last time we played them btw) will surely have even the most ardent MON defenders asking questions. I've tried to give him every chance even since that play-off melt-down against Denmark but the performances in the friendlies since then have been just as depressing as during the WC qualifiers where the players have been treating the ball like a hand grenade with the pin removed. I know the most recent game was against a world-class French team but it's clear a rot has set in and it doesn't look like getting better any time soon. As a few others have said, the Nations' League could be the end of him at this rate and I won't be sorry if that happens. At least it wouldn't cost vital Euro 2020 qualifying points but it could cost us 2nd seeding. I appreciate what he has done including those glorious nights against Germany, Bosnia and at the Euros but it looks like he'd be better off moving on and letting us make a fresh start with a new manager. Unfortunately, it looks like a case of easier said than done with the contract signed. |

Granted it was less than impressive stuff on Monday but I don't think we did too bad considering we were a squad essentially down to the bare bones against a team who had their best 23 available and are amongst the favourites for the World Cup.
I understand people have expectations of how the team should perform but some people need a dose of reality considering the players we had available. |

6 goals in 10 games is horrendous by any standards.
I remember when coonts (not too many on here I hasten to add, merely other arseholes who were going to Ireland games) were slating Robbie Keane and we told the coonts they'll rue the day he retires.
