The part I don't get is why are papers blurring outs the faces of the people shouting at Sterling? I know that it is obviously for legal reasons as not to accuse someone perhaps an incident person who was perhaps just calling him a **** but still even then they shouldn't have anonymity. |

It should be up to people themselves if they want to admit to following Chelsea.

They could be clearly seen on the match footage!

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

The others might look to sue on the basis that they were dragged into it when they were actually innocent*. * - In law, at least.

The oddest thing to come out of this was the media, in another attempt at showing how out of touch they are, picked a black man who happened to be near the incident out and asked him why he didn't do anything. Why pick a black man? Are white men supposed to ignore this sort of thing and if they do it is more acceptable than if a black man does. Is that not racist?

Did "the media" (all of them?) ask him why he didn't "do" anything i.e. physically or verbally intervene? Or was it, as Piers Morgan (I know, I know) had it, that they were asking why this man, Nathan Lewis, wasn't so apparently outraged by what he was hearing - a not unreasonable question, I'd have thought. To which the guy in question said it was because he didn't hear anything racist. (About 10 mins into the video insert) Btw, I'm not defending the Chelsea fans or the media, or in any way criticising Mr. Lewis, but accuracy sometimes gets lost in a firestorm like this.

It was still unnecessary and, by its very nature, racist.

To ask a black man why he didn't appear visibly shocked by hearing what was widely reported as vicious, racist abuse happening right next to him? Sorry, but that was entirely legitimate reporting in my view. Whereas what would have been racist would have been consciously to deny this man the opportunity to give his account of what he saw and heard.

Firstly, he saw and heard nothing. It was entirely pointless. Secondly, why not ask any of the people who were closer and definitely would have seen or heard something. All it takes for evil to triumph is for (good) men to do nothing."
Anybody that saw or heard something should have done something, regardless of their skin pigmentation.

And in any case, he didn't say he "saw and heard nothing". What he said was that he didn't hear anything racist.
Besides, how do you know they didn't ask other people, but failed to get a useful reply? Meanwhile, I'm not sure the media actually did approach him. From the Good Morning clip, it seemed that his mates were asking him about it (I assume he's got black mates as well as white, btw), so he decided to go on the record by approaching Piers Morgan.
And while you're considering your reply, how do you know that some of the bystanders didn't do something, such as inform Stewards or the Police? Meanwhile, let's turn this round. Imagine you've got a situation where a group of individuals in an overwhelmingly white crowd were seen to abuse a black footballer. And the media refused to speak to the one black guy who was standing very close by? Black people would immediately point to that omission as being racist ("Our voices never get heard") - and they'd be quite right (imo).

I think it would be racist to talk to the one black person nearby, that is my point and I am not going to change it. I don't think he should have been singled out for his skin colour anymore than Sterling was.
If he approached Morgan, fair enough. I would like to think anybody who was friends with anybody who was in earshot would ask the same question, otherwise they are part of the problem. As for what I would do, it is largely a moot point as I wouldn't go back to Chelsea, exclusively due to their racism. However, based on past experience, where I have acted first to racism and thought afterwards, I probably would have jumped in and got a hiding, but at least tried to take one down with me. |

I watched the two parts of 'Out of Their Skin' there. I really enjoyed them and Wright wasn't anywhere near as annoying as usual. The only thing that annoyed me was the bit where they were trying to imply race was behind why people don't like Ashley Cole. It really isn't! In fairness to Ince, he diplomatically said that fans couldn't identify with him.
I hadn't heard the Cloughie story Viv Anderson spun, top class!
