Spot on. Our current policy criminalises addiction which should be treated as a health issue.

Prohibition has never and will never work. Imagine taxing drug sales, controlling the quality and using the funds generated to educate people on the pitfalls of addiction and helping treat the affected. Crime would decrease, our prison costs would be down and the likes of the Kinahans wouldn't have a black market to make millions from.

Imagine there'd be less work for solicitors and judges.
Imagine there'd be no need for garda and prison officer overtime.
Imagine there'd be less need for probation services and social workers.
Imagine there'd be no stories for tabloid journo's.
Imagine there be less need to build and maintain prison's.

It is common sense, but as you can see on another thread where you have people wanting other people punished for not having happy childhoods or applying themselves as adolescents, you have a lot of people to convince.

A book worth reading on this subject is "Chasing The Scream" .A few chapters about Portugals idea and of the wider problems getting changes made.

Clap

It's true. Decriminalisation and regulation is the way forward.

It should also stop drugs being cut with dangerous substances for profits, often these dangerous substances are what kills users and not the actual drug itself.

A young lad (18) from near my home town died from taking what he thought was an Ecstasy Tablet (MDMA) not so long ago, turned out to be mixed with a dangerous chemical that has claimed a number of lives.

If regulated correctly I feel like these deaths are preventable.

Just look at the money the states in America are making off legalisation, should be a no brainer.

Imagine someone telling you, if you legalise this, you'll have more money for your budget yearly and it will free up so much court time/gardai time that it can be better used elsewhere, but yet you still say no, hard to fathom.

It's big business and that could be the main stumbling block.
It's obvious changes are needed ,the current set up doesn't work.

We might as well legalise cocaine. It's everywhere.

Watching Narco's and the amount of murders from it, and Mexico is like that now. How many drug related murders are there a year across the world?

There were 2,234 murders in June in Mexico. Not all drug related but the vast majority, one month, one country. Madness.

They need to rethink it and just sell it legally in shops in Portugal. Lisbon is ridiculous for getting asked every thirty seconds to buy hash or cocaine

That's probably the end goal but is it likely?
Decriminalization was a huge first step and solved some major problems, legalisation might not be possible.

I think being more harsh on dealers would solve a lot of issues or if you are caught in possession of cocaine would be far better than legalizing it.

I could name a fair few lads who became rats for the police and are walking around town like they were angels.

It's easy give a name when you're in trouble, the simple fact is giving a name or two shouldn't mean you get away with dealing especially if you're caught with thousands worth of product.

But jailing dealers doesn't really work, there will always be someone to take their place.
Some decriminalization is needed then Health and education is probably the best route to try first.
Legalise cannabis should be the first step imo.Let it be taxed and use that money to fund the health and education aspect.Make cannabis worthless to a cartel/dealer would be a good start compared to what is currently going on in this country.

Being Harsh doesn't make a difference, look at the U.S. Dealers over there can get 15-25 year sentences regularly.

As has been already mentioned, harsher sentencing hasn't worked elsewhere. All you do is clog the prison system.

If there is demand for drugs then there will be supply.
