Interesting

Mourinho signing mostly players over 6 foot seemed to excite some fans in the summer

would have said the height thing for top teams aspiring to win the league in the top nations in Europe is actually quite the opposite. As in, smaller sides usually do better. Obviously you will want a big goalkeeper, centre halves and maybe 1/2 others, but I would have thought the average height of the very best sides would be smaller.

The games this weekend will sort a huge amount out in the PL. Can see City beating Arsenal it's just a matter of whether Arsenal put in an effort to make a game of it or not. Chelsea would usually be fancied to beat United at Stamford Bridge but they seem a basket case of a team at the moment.

This is a chance for United to give themselves real breathing space to the teams behind them in what could turn out to be an almighty scrap for top 4 places yet. They'll park the bus and play for the draw. They should look to get at a confidence shattered Chelsea defence but we all know they won't. Chances are because of this, Chelsea will eek out the win.

If Chelsea win, the gap between United, Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool will be very little at all. Be interesting to see who if anyone can come out of the pack to get close to City. Spurs look the only ones capable to me still.

I can see Palace and Swansea going down.

Have no idea who the 3rd place team will be. A lot of teams will be sweating this season as the newly promoted teams are doing well.

That the website, where they build length of contract, age, wages, etc. into their valuation of each player?

Interesting table alright. No matter how accurate people will argue it is, amazing to see Spurs in 2nd spot considering their wage bill in comparison to the other top teams around them. I presume their overall wage bill is still miles off others.

Also, looking the likes of Bayern well down the table is an interesting one. A couple of years ago, I would have said they had player for player the best squad in Europe.
"I called him an embarrassment to FIFA and to himself," .... He said 'No-one speaks to me like that'.... and I said, "well I do' and that was that."

It's getting boring now at this stage. sh*te boring predictable journalism. United after 11 games last season 18 points, scored 16, conceded 13, this season 23 points, 23 scored 5 conceded. Yes they're the biggest disappointment so far Sleepy

Which of the 'big six' has been the biggest disappointment?

Manchester United. Yes, champions Chelsea have under-performed, but United spent in a way which should have delivered them swagger and self-expression. The black dog mood of Jose Mourinho, with his PSG flirtation to boot, is not helping one bit. Mourinho no longer inspires players.

Summer spending

  • Man City - £217.3m
  • Chelsea - £202m
  • Man Utd - £169.5m
  • Everton - £152.9m

Have you not got any concerns for United so far this season Bhob?
Are you not disappointed with their form since the Liverpool game?
Does Mourinho's away form against the big teams not continue to concern and disappoint you?
Do you think they can put in a title challenge this season?

It depends on your perspective really. It's probably seen as a toss up between United and Chelsea for most disappointing so far, however the media narrative pre-season was that United would really give City a good go in the title race and obviously that has not materialised to date. That could all change of course, it's still only early November after all, but as things stand and given the expectations it is United who have flattered to deceive the most thus far in their eyes.

Despite being champions Chelsea possibly have the slight mitigating factor of losing Matic and Costa, two big players for them last year, and also being without Hazard for the first month or so. It's not much of an excuse for them however as they willing sold the former two players and subsequently replaced them. Their problems seem to stem from issues behind the scenes but they have definitely disappointed so far - both domestically and in the CL.

I reckon United are neither exceeding nor failing to meet expectations. The media built them up to be title challengers in hope more than expectation - based on Mourinho's historical second season record at clubs and the fact that another Guardiola v Mourinho title race generates all sorts of interest. If you scratch even a small bit beneath the surface however you can see this was never likely to materialise. United came 6th last season - they signed Lukaku - direct replacement for Ibra - and also Matic and Lindelof. So basically they signed two players and suddenly they are expected to jump from 6th to 1st/2nd. It never seemed remotely likely to me. This could all change as the season progresses but personally I don't expect United to be doing anything other than challenging for a top four position this season. Anything else is just bonus territory.

I'd imagine what pissed off those journos enough to put down United as the most disappointing side were their performances in the big games to date. They got off to a flyer of a start thanks to a dream set of opening fixtures and instead of using that as a launch pad for their season, Mourinho reverted to type and set up to get a draw at both Anfield and Stamford Bridge. Given the turmoil both sides were in when United faced them it was a great opportunity to claim big name scalps and really build momentum for a potential title race but United's ambition, or rather lack there of, reflected their aspirations this season. They are going for a top four finish - not to win the title - and that is what has caused all these journos to list them as most disappointing.

It wasn't just journos that were tipping United for the title.
Plenty on here were at least expecting and predicting a title challenging. The bookies had them slight second favourites just behind City at the start, and Mourinho also said this (probably recognising his spend over the last two summers):

Reading an article on Football365, kind of addresses what we were discussing above there Devrozex

It is important to remember that United started the season on a largely level playing field. The shortcomings in a squad that had finished sixth in the Premier League but won two trophies had been addressed. Mourinho signed the centre-forward, the central midfielder and the central defender he wanted, and accepted the inability to deliver his fourth demand: a winger. Only three clubs spent more in the summer, but only six recouped less in player sales than their £9.7m.

Mourinho cannot claim he was not content. “I think every one of us is equipped to win the title,” he said in August. “I think Tottenham, without any spending, are equipped to win. Man City, they are equipped. Arsenal the same. Liverpool are equipped. Chelsea are the champions, lost some players but bought some players.

“It is difficult to say who is better equipped. I think the competition can be better than ever.”

In that same interview, Mourinho assessed his own club’s chances. “I have a good group and a football club much better equipped,” he said. “We are much better organised in the areas that support the first-team squad. We are much better organised at every level. So we will go for it this season. We are going to try to win the title.”

Yet three months later, the PR machine is already shaping this as the season where City were the unstoppable force and United were simply one of 19 other teams who never stood a chance. As with the painful U-turn the media conducted almost exactly a year ago, the foundations have again been laid for possible failure.

Mourinho himself described this as a marathon with six equal runners in August; it is difficult to stomach the concept of a one-horse race in November.
