I thought that before, that one challenge per game might work. You keep the challenge if right, it would mean only challenging when absolutely certain. I don't think so now, players are convinced even when they are clearly in the wrong. I still think they should just have the fourth official miked to the ref ad when the ref has made a very bad error the fourth official can pull him back within 30 seconds. I think it is the only way it can be done without farce and what is what should have been trialled first. |

Ronaldo is a leader through his sheer incredible ability and the huge input he makes to his sides winning games, but he certainly doesn't strike me as a natural leader as such. He has probably matured a bit since 2010, but his carry on then at that year's World Cup as captain of Portugal was pretty shocking. He regularly threw little tantrums at his team mates and sulked afterwards. He appeared to do the exact opposite of a what a leader should do by making his team mates feel ten inches tall rather than ten feet. Again, he has definitely matured since then but at 25 he was hardly a nipper back then either. He's slowly developed over time into a leader of sorts, but again it appears to nearly all be based around the fact that he is streets ahead of the third best player in the world (whoever that may be) and is very much a big game performer.
As for the penalties discussion, personally I would always want my strongest players going up first as, apart from the fact they might be wasted if going nearer the end (as we saw with Ronaldo last night), you can build up a bit of momentum in shoot-outs by going ahead and therefore having less pressure on your latter takers and more importantly far more pressure on your opposition's latter takers.

U sure? Still inexcusable that they risked not having him take one. |

As far as I know yes, list of takers and order from 1-11 needs to be given to Referee. |

Yeah, the order must be decided on and can only be changed if there is an injury.

FFS it was the confederations cup. Suppose you're on tenterhooks anticipating the start of the Emirates Cup in a few weeks?

We have had many variants of the same discussion on here over the years. 1) Yes, Ronaldo is a superb player. It's fair to call him a true great at this stage. 2) Yes, he is an egomaniac and wants all the limelight. 3) He leads by example through the level of his performances. 4) He is a total penis

I think if you are going to be the world's most arrogant man then you need a personality to boot, preferably with flaws. Egotism and boring brilliance are never a great match. I have grown to like him over the years, I am not a believer in charity myself but you have to appreciate someone who is trying to do good and he has been great to watch as a player, on and off the ball.

Dont get that point at all. He's given up two weeks of his summer to go to Russia, and he's scored goals over there like he wanted to win it. He wanted to win the trophy. To just shrug your shoulders and say well it was irrelevant is missing the point. It's shirking the discussion. Especially because he has done this before in an important game, the semi final of Euro 2012. Inexcusable that he didnt take a penalty in that shootout in 2012. Clearly hasn't learned.

The 5th is generally the pressure kick so fair play to him for saving himself for that one. Don't like the man but has had some career People seem to jump on his back over every little thing

Didn't see the penalty incident on the Portugal-Chile game, but when the Russia-Mexico game was stopped to run a penalty appeal by the video, the saddos complained it took too long to reach the right decision, which was no change. If it takes 5 seconds or 5 minutes that's fine, we have the right decision however long it takes.
As usual, Ronaldo elected to go fifth to get all the glory, when the usual custom is to put your best spot kick takers first for obvious reasons. Going fifth for Real Madrid is fine when there are 4 other takers with similar ability, but Portugal don't have that luxury. The first taker may not have the glory of the last, but this is a team sport, and the first kick is every bit as important as the last. |

Even if Ronaldo had gone first and scored, the other 3 penalties were awful - they'd still have lost 3-1.
Move on

You and Bronze have hit the nail on the head - a true captain/leader would put his ego to one side for the sake of the team and go first to give the following penalty takers a lift, especially if, as you say, the team's not exactly overloaded with top class players and assured penalty takers like his club are. If he had this type of attribute, there would be no argument about who is the best in the world.
