On such a basis, South Africa would have been ruled out of hosting the 2010 World Cup, and Brazil would most certainly have been ruled out of hosting the 2014 World Cup.

Poland and Ukraine would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2012, Austria and Switzerland would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2008.

Portugal would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2004, which Spain also bid for.

On any "technical analysis" comparing Portugal and Spain's stadium infrastructure in 1999, when the hosts were announced, Spain would have won easily.

But we weren't ruled out sid. In fact the opposite it said we could host it.

We just didn't get as many marks under that category as those that do h have experience of hosting large scAle events bigger than this one. Also remember this is a different process that the football world cup and euros.

We finished 3rd based on an assessment by consultants which had a strict marking scheme.

I think the weighting was only announced after the bids were handed in.

And surely its a major issue for debate on big out of city stadiums with small crowds or smaller compact full stadiums in towns and cities.

I think the IFU have been extremely professional in the last push for the votes.

As for suggestions we don't have the transport infrastructure, that is ridiculous, as apart from the games in Dublin, there would not be any huge crowds, and a lot less than the GAA would get during the summer.

You can travel from Dublin to anywhere in the country in a little over 4 hours max, by coach, and if additional coaches are needed, they can be hired in from the UK or Europe as has happened at the London Olympics.

Lastly if previous hosts get extra marks just for been previous hosts, that makes it almost impossible for a new first time host nation to be awarded the tournament.

The most important things the IRFU have been pointing out is that World Rugby has said all 3 bidders are capable of hosting the event, and that the technical report is advisory only and not binding.

I would be shocked If the weighting and marking scheme was not available to the applicants before the submission. I know it was only reported in the media afterwards. But I will stand corrected on that one.

Common sense prevails. How that SA bid was deemed better than France is beyond me

16 years was far too long for France to be without the Rugby World Cup. Le famine est fin.

France hosting it will grow the game hugely in new markets and the novelty factor will be huge.

I'd like to see them get 2027 too.

And 2031.

Makes a mockery of the evaluation process and recommendation.
SA must be rightly cheesed off.
Some of our “Celtic cousins” obviously voted elsewhere, votes were promised for Ireland.
Non European tournament for 2027, next bid here would be for 2031 so.
Maybe by then the broadband will be up to scratch outside of Leinster.
Hopefully “bidding”💶💴💵💷 lessons will be learnt.

England haven't hosted a Rugby World Cup since 2015.

By 2027, that will have been far too long.

They have the stadiums, the infrastructure and the experience of hosting major events, such as Rugby World Cups, and would do a great job as hosts.

Hugo O'Neill uses derogatory words associated with mental illness to describe the evaluation process, he also uses an International index that is a longer list than World Rugby Union ever hope to be.

http://www.independent.ie/sport/rugby/world-cup/ranking-ireland-as-an-equal-security-risk-to-south-africa-just-seems-crazy-hugo-macneill-on-evaluation-report-36312809.html

Ranking Ireland as an equal security risk to South Africa just seems crazy' - Hugo MacNeill on Evaluation report

"Ranking Ireland as an equal security risk to South Africa just seems crazy. The World Peace Index - which is the most respected index on security issues - ranks Ireland as the 10th safest country in the world, France as the 51st safest country in the world, and South Africa is the 123rd safest country in the world."

..............

(South Africa reply) South African sports minister Thulas Nxesi  downplayed those concerns claiming that South Africa has an extended history of 'incident-free mega events'.

"They alleged that our country was grossly ill-prepared to host such a big event," said Nxesi.

"They further declared our country to be the crime capital of the world. They prophesised impending doom and gloom that would befall the tournament, and to tourists and fans coming to our shores.

"We have a long history of major, incident-free mega events."

...........

(previously) Ireland's Rugby World Cup bid chairman Dick Spring ........ "The Global Peace Index, recognised as the world's most trustworthy measurement, places Ireland at 10th, France at 51st and South Africa at 123rd."

For me, if World Rugby Union could gather 123 'RU Nations' on a long list and give each of them access to qualifying for the Rugby Union World Cup then I would have more sympathy for the Ireland Rugby World Cup Bid frustrations (Rep of Ire + UK on Global Peace Index).

I just came across this, part of Ireland Bid for Rugby World Cup September - October 2023 "Total focus: The tournament will be Ireland’s biggest – and only major sporting event – during the hosting window."

There is plenty of stuff going on in September and October every year.

Scotland went for France citing they would earn the most coin.
Wales went for SA as they were following the recommendations.
England voted for us.

It's a missed opportunity IMO.
We really needed to co-host it Scotland and or Wales to have a great chance.
Hosting 50% or 33% is better than nothing.

The transport system here isn't the best. That must have played a part.
