There were already 2 stadiums earmarked in Belfast.  I imagine if casement Park wasn't ready then it could be looked at.  However it would be complicated by qualifiers for Euro2024.  Of course the Aviva would have the same issue.

I think deep down we all know our stadiums and infrastructure are a long way behind France.  I was hoping that because they had hosted and will host so many other events incl the 2007 tournament that it would be shared around. I'm surprised at South Africa scoring so well in these areas.  It must have improved considerably since 2010.  The stadiums appear great but are very basic.  Their infrastructure is worse than ours.

There are only really two views that can be taken on it: 1) we scored the lowest of the three bids overall and therefore should not host it or 2) the report verified that Ireland has the capabilities of hosting the tournament successfully.

The fact of the matter is that both points are potentially accurate but it's up to Ireland's bid team to persuade the other unions to lean towards the latter stance. No matter what way you look at it there didn't appear to be a huge gulf between the three bids according to the report so I'm not sure if it is quite the death sentence certain people assume/hope it is.

good article, and makes a valid point. also highlights what a dildo shane ross is. I'd be an advocate for withdrawing and passing on any additional funding that would be spent on brown-nosing onto lesser sports that would put it to better use

I’m sure the assoc’s of Wal/Sco/Eng would rather 5 consecutive weeks in South Africa than hopping on to a Ryanair plane every couple of days to Dublin from Edinburgh/Cardiff etc.

Shane Ross is a f**king moron.

The day before the Train strike he is tweeting about Man U game.

when there was a actual strike he says it has nothing to do with him despite being Minister for Transport.

I had hoped for better things from Shane Ross when he became minister for sport but has failed in all aspects from the Rio ticketing scandal to the rwc bid. Ffs Irish Rail dont have enough rolling stock to cope with any all Ireland final, never mind a tournament. Was on a train from Bordeaux to lille on the eve of the Italy game last year the capacity of the train must have been near 3000. We are light years behind being able to host a tournament of that magnitude. Shane Ross's tenure as minister will be remembered for all the wrong reasons as much as Bernard Allen's famous TV speech after Michelle Smiths medal haul at the Olympics when we all thought he was going to announce an Olympic size pool for Ireland instead he just offered his congratulations.

Thought it was pretty disgusting and snobbery of the irfu to publicly complain about security issues and financial stability of South Africa.

Piece in the Guardian about how the security issue (to be able provide a secure political and economic environment) was lightly weighted in the calculation of percentages...about 3.5% of each countries total score.
SA scored 1.75%
Ire scored 2.62%

Whereas SA promising €160 million, to Ireland’s promise of €120 million in the “tournament fee” category earned the following %....
SA 10.5% of their total score.
Ire 6.6% of their total score.

Final scores were
SA 78.97%
Ire 72.25%

So if Ire had have promised the same as SA financially their score could have been approx 4% higher.

Money talks

Ifs and buts I know but if the “secure political/economic” category was scored/weighted higher than it is, surely Ireland would have been the front runner, seen as so Ire were rated as 50% higher than SA in that “secure political/economic” category.

Yes and they should have known the weighting. You always alter your submission or application based on the marking scheme. Whether that's an exam or a job interview. Make sure you have what they are looking for. Don't give out afterwards

One thing that supporters of the Irish bid are absolutely right about is the following:

It's ridiculous to rule out a country from hosting a major tournament because their stadiums aren't built yet.

On such a basis, South Africa would have been ruled out of hosting the 2010 World Cup, and Brazil would most certainly have been ruled out of hosting the 2014 World Cup.

Poland and Ukraine would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2012, Austria and Switzerland would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2008.

Portugal would have been ruled out of hosting Euro 2004, which Spain also bid for.

On any "technical analysis" comparing Portugal and Spain's stadium infrastructure in 1999, when the hosts were announced, Spain would have won easily.

I think the weighting was only announced after the bids were handed in.

And surely its a major issue for debate on big out of city stadiums with small crowds or smaller compact full stadiums in towns and cities.

I think the IFU have been extremely professional in the last push for the votes.

As for suggestions we don't have the transport infrastructure, that is ridiculous, as apart from the games in Dublin, there would not be any huge crowds, and a lot less than the GAA would get during the summer.

You can travel from Dublin to anywhere in the country in a little over 4 hours max, by coach, and if additional coaches are needed, they can be hired in from the UK or Europe as has happened at the London Olympics.

Lastly if previous hosts get extra marks just for been previous hosts, that makes it almost impossible for a new first time host nation to be awarded the tournament.

The most important things the IRFU have been pointing out is that World Rugby has said all 3 bidders are capable of hosting the event, and that the technical report is advisory only and not binding.

I know nothing :-)
