I was wrong, the Rugby lads did go against their own recommendation process, which the IRFU had been urging them to do, with the result that we finished even further behind. Be careful what you wish for & all that.

Not a lot to attack the French with bar the security/terrorism angle, and that is extremely dodgy ground for Dick Spring & co to take, so they sensibly won't. I see now Wales & Scotland are to blame, maybe the Italians as well, for not voting for us. Shame on them.

The IRFU have no one to blame for this only themselves, first step of their a bid was to build Connaught a new stadium to leave a legacy in that province instead of expecting the gaa to supply all the stadiums for the bid. Why would we be give the World Cup when The gaa was going to benefit in the long run and no legacy of improved facilities for Rugby in this country. In my opinion our bid was a joke and the IRFU should be ashamed of themselves.

Legacy wasn't a criteria for awarding of this so that is a non-issue.

Apparently if the Scots and Welsh had voted for us it would have eliminated SA and forced a run-off second round vote with France. It would have been second preference votes predominately from the tri-nations unions so could have gone either way.

It's very disappointing but given the criteria laid out in the technical report it would appear our one chance of hosting is now gone. On a separate note it has to be a source of embarrassment for World Rugby that their own council voted against their recommendations - so much for 'transparency'. Can definitely see them changing the process for future world cups after this.

TBH the recommendation was BS. The ranking of SA ahead of France was a joke

Well yeah, the real joke being that the parameters of were not clearly laid down to the three bidding nations beforehand. This essentially meant that they could weight it to suit whatever outcome they had a preference for. Call me an aul cynic, but the fact that SA offered the highest bid fee, France the 2nd and Ireland the 3rd - and the recommendation went in that order is probably not entirely coincidental.

France's bid consists almost entirely of association football stadiums.

The real joke is that France are getting the tournament 16 years after hosting it previously.

That's far too short a gap.

The whole point about major sporting events is that the choice of host country should be spread around as much as possible.

There's now nothing to stop England from bidding for 2031 and getting it.

That's grand if you think the same countries should host tournaments over and over again.

Why didn't they offer Wales and Scotland a few games and remove the poor stadiums swim the bid. Would have sorted two issues out there and then

How is a lad from Tallaght so into rugby? Did you grow up playing it on the streets?

I'd love to see the look the lads in Mary's or Bective would give Andy if he arrived into the clubhouse looking to join #youarenotwelcome #thisisrugbycountry
