Were any of those actively courted by the FAI and in the frame to be selected by a current Irish manager? I'm not talking about a list of England players who were eligible on paper to represent the ROI. I'm talking about players we were expressly interested in and wanted to bring into our current squad, who snubbed us and became full England internationals instead.

Bertrand and Cahill were. Keane and Milner played for us at underage level!

I think that misses the point somewhat too, for some they might realise it is England or nothing and, unfortunately, there is little that can be done about it.

Also as pointed out before the likes of Jamie Vardy has given these lads hope that they could break in later in life.

Do you think a 22 year Jamie Vardy would have had any chance of making an England squad?
There are certainly elements of that too. There are a wide range of factors and influences but people would rather jump in and start a witch hunt.
I think in this particular instance that Kelly has clearly been badly advised.

Yep i think so too, but as the lad said he had personal reasons for not joining up, people were quick to right off Scott Hogan but he has gone on to play for us now. The only thing as someone pointed out now is if he can make amends with MON.( tbh all this probably takes is a phonecall or a text Wink )

That came up here before somewhere, I think it was exposed as a myth. Milner played for Leeds at 16, we would have heard about it at that time if he had played for us only 2/3 years earlier. There might even be an old thread on it somewhere.

As for Kelly, it has the makings of Grealish II, MON has rightfully made clear he won't be chasing him, the ball is in his court now & that's about all there is to be said about it until he declares for us or England. He hasn't really achieved enough in the game to make the coveted cause celebre status on here either, so I don't think this will be another 300 page effort.

The point that MON called him up initially you'd say yes

Don't think it has anywhere near the same hype potential as the Grealish situation, nor is it as clear what is happening. With Grealish, the silence was fairly deafening, with Kelly, there's contradictory information coming from all angles. MON did seem to jump the gun with the "he wants to play for England" line, with both Kelly and his entourage denying this with varying degrees of vigour.
In any case, it's a messy one, and whereas Grealish seemed dead-set on what he wanted, I can't help but feel this situation could have been defused with a more subtle line of diplomacy (from both sides).

Nope ...Milner never represented Ireland, not even talk of it....made his debut at Leeds 16yrs old and it was pretty big news at the time, if he'd played for Ireland before that it would have been common knowledge

Aron Lennon who broke through at Leeds at a similar age had an Irish mother but he never played for Ireland either

I think it's a very fair point...no use in getting worked up about this guy as he is'nt an MON type player and would'nt feature in the important games.
This is'nt a dig it is just a fair call on the manager and his tactics....if given the choice to play a Kelly type player or a Whelan type who gets the nod from MON?

No it isn't a fair point at all. Practically every single one of your posts is bitching about MON in some shape or form.

Yep O'Neill is a busted flush, said it 2016. As for this Kelly lad, as his Sasanach compatriots would say

"Jog on mate"

I'd rather we kept our dignity than get on our knees for non entities like this.

Not a regular in an awful reading side aged 22

I’m sure an England call up is imminent
