Decent programme on RTE 1 there about the hurling final, a bit of a behind the scenes look at match day featuring some commentators & the stadium controller. We lost this time as well unfortunately.
Interesting bit was they miked the referee Fergal Horgan, who came across very well as regards how he tried to run the game. Never knew meself that the sideline official had so much influence, he was telling him over the mike ' you need to speak to white 3' (Barry Coughlan) ' holding jersey off the ball' and such, and even going as far to tell him where he should be on the pitch position wise at times. Worth a look, if it pops up on the RTE player again. |

Had a tour of Páirc Uí Chaoimh over the last few days. Friend of mine working there during the build so brought myself and my Dad up. Absolutely savage stadium. Games under lights there are going to be very special.

I was surprised myself how much communication there was between officials. I think the umpires were miked up also. Fergal Horan was the star of the show by a long way and a great insight albeit there was a football equivalent with Philly McMahon whinging 'it's always the back'. Horan was very clear in his explaination of why he gave free's etc. You realise watching it how close Waterford actually came to winning it. That missed free late on and the 2 point turnaround. |

I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

5 Waterford lads with All Stars.
Always going to be arguments to and for however I don't thik there are any glaring omissions. Brick and Moran were no brainers as was Barron. Any complaints Deise? |

Must see if I can get a look at this during next week when there's a gap between the EPL and the world cup play-offs. I saw a similar programme last year about the football final which showed the pre-match preparations behind the scenes eg referee (again miked up), commentators and showing them in action during the game etc. It was pretty good as well.

I watched the football version of behind the scenes at All Ireland final day a few years ago, but found that show on Monday night boring and turned it off halfway through
The best part of both shows was listening to the refs |

Enjoyed the show Monday night, not nice viewing from a waterford prospective but better team won. That Kevin Moran missed point in the 2nd half to put us 2 up really changed the game
Very happy to have 5 Waterford all stars big congrats to them And too the rest of the all stars. Can see Joe canning and Connor whelan collecting the Poty awards |

Joe Canning HOTY
Typical GAA anyway, looking at a players past exploits or profile instead of the main reason!!! How he hurled during the year Joe Canning has been one of the best players of his generation no question and I was delighted he finally won an All-Ireland but ffs you wouldn't even have him in the top 5 best hurlers this year, never mind winning the HOTY. It would have been Jamie Barron (first pick by a mile) or Gearoid McInerney for me. Edited by Green Devil - 04 Nov 2017 at 12:23am |

Aye. I dont think that anyone who has ever seen an ash plank being swung at leather before couldnt say Jamie Barron wasn't the hurler of the year.
Similar over on the other code. |

Wouldn't be one for getting excited about these things, and I share your view that Barron is unquestionably the best hurler in the country. Think it was always going to be Joe, and really he did 2 things all year, took decent frees, a few sidelines, and that winning point V Tipp in the SF. That was what won it for him (along with winning the AI), or more accurately, the context of the point was what won it, a near impossible shot in injury time to get the winner that very few players could manage. Had he scored it in minute 2 and not minute 72, he wouldn't be hurler of the year.
Don't really grudge him the award, possibly deserved over the course of what is now a long career, but in this case, it was more an award for past service than anything magnificent he did this year for Galway (bar that one point). A bit ironic that while he was carrying the team for years on his own, he never got the individual award, but got it when Galway had a formidable team that wasn't dependant on him and his contributions were arguably less, but that's the way it goes sometimes. I don't think we will see a repeat of last years Tipp hysteria over Callinan losing out, and mainly that is because to the casual fan, Barron remains strangely underrated, even though he is picking up his 2nd all star. A few WD friends of mine were adamant that Moran should have got it, there are many good things about Kevin, a warrior, a leader, an athlete, but he is nowhere near as good a hurler as the other 2. |
