Doesn't appear to be complete control of all of the army factions. Reports of a helicopter shot down by a fighter jet.
Wouldn't fancy being stuck in a plane on the tarmac of Istanbul airport right now.
I could agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

Coup seemingly on the way to being defeated, depending on whose twitter feed ya believe in. Crucially doesn't seem to have the backing of all the military, though the display of tanks on the streets etc would make you think it was backed by a reasonably substantial part of it.

Picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.....

BBC reporting that Turkish Special forces against coup. Turkey's stance on ISIS may have something to do with it

Crazy footage of civilians throwing pro-coup soldiers out of government buildings and random people climbing on tanks to prevent them from moving.
It seems like the civilian support for Erdogan wasn't anticipated and has badly backfired for them.

1 thing I haven't figured out is who are people staging the coup, and why?

Could we be looking at the start of a civil war? Or will it be an Egypt type outcome.

This Gulen lad seems to be the most likely instigator, the Guardian put this on their live feed earlier.

Gives an example of what he has been trying to do. One thing is very clear; this is very unclear!

From what I have been reading , the former seems more likely, there are a lot more variables here though which means anything is possible. If the public believe it was the Gulen factor I mentioned above then they aren't trying to stop it out of any love for Erdogan, more a lesser of two evils type scenario. There might then become an attempt at removing Erdogan too, he certainly isn't universally popular! When you factor in the Kurds and ISIS into the situation then you are looking at a possible civil war or, at the very least, chaotic carnage for a period of time.

Gulen has condemned the coup in the last few minutes.

From what I've read,Erdogan has been trying to reduce the powers and authority of the military, and has tried to take the country away from their secular views.Obviously a few boyos in the army aren't having that

I still wouldn't take his condemnation too seriously. If it was the latter then I believe they would get more public support. The whole thing is still very unclear though.

I'm guessing the opposition to the coup is because of the fact that is exactly that,a forced attempt to take control.Autocracy wouldn't be the most popular way to rule.A lot of Egyptians have been tweeting about how the Turks need to learn from their mistake. If Erdogan comes out of this,he'll have even more power

Maybe in Istanbul. The majority voted for Erdogen. Hard to know what's going on. See alot of soldiers being 'escorted' away by police and what looks like civilians.

I wonder if Erdogan can come out of this though, once people are mobilised and the coup is defeated, what then? The divide over Erdogan is deep enough to cause further chaos, even if the coup is defeated.

So many reports and conflicting reports and no actual live broadcasts from within the country - Social Media has been blocked also.

It's all very confusing to what's going on!
