I mean, never mind senior friendly internationals, McClean had been called up by NI for a senior NI competitive international - AND ACCEPTED - before his transfer to Sunderland came through and Niall Quinn had a word. Nor did McClean need the FAI to get an Irish passport for him like Declan. No, that was the IFA who arranged it. Of course, it would have been a British passport, only there wasn't time due to a UK Bank Holiday intervening, which necessitated an application to Dublin, where there wasn't a Bank Holiday. And when Rice went on his first foreign trip with the FAI, I doubt they had to buy him a shirt and pair of trousers for the official post-match meal provided by the hosts, on account of his only packing trackkie bottoms and sports gear for the trip like you-know-who. So yes, not like-for-like at all.

It’s probably better off James McClean decided to switch to Ireland as he would have had to retire from International football for Northern Ireland in November 2014 anyway. Neil Lennon was subjected to vile abuse for choosing to play for Celtic. Dear God could you imagine the abuse McCleam would have got. Bullet truely dodged by both parties.

There's an attempt to rewrite history here by the England camp. No doubt at the instruction of whichever PR company they have working for them. Southgate, and now Rice, have both recently referred to the fact that Rice played for us at underage level, while omitting the fact that he played for us at senior level. The inference of this is that he played for us at underage level ONLY. This is not an accident. This is an attempt to rewrite the player's history.

If people are going to follow his interviews when he is with England looking to get annoyed they will more than likely be successful.
In saying that, there is no doubt that Rice's naivety is being exploited here by by England to make themselves more comfortable with it; that in itself is quite bizarre. There is also an element of him playing up to the England fans, which seems unnecessary, but that's how modern football works.

There's a lot a frothing-at-the-mouth Brexiteer types who are not at all impressed with Declan's distasteful and unfortunate past association to 'the Eire'. I'd imagine he's attempting to pander to this crowd and, as pointed out above, there also appears to be a clear, unified message from the England camp to downplay this association with us as well.
