I know he was hardly a legend for his clubs or for Ireland but I always liked Andy Keogh. Struck me as being that kind of old fashioned wee terrier sort of player who just enjoyed playing for the sake of the game.

Thought he would have been better off staying on loan in LOI than that.

The subject of my favourite exchange on YBIG. I can’t remember who it was - “Keogh is so fast he could get on the end of his own cross” - “he’d have to be very fast to get up to row z”

You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995" |

Limited but game, in the best Irish tradition. A regular and increasingly inexplicable call-up under Trappatoni, maybe because he scored in a friendly early in the Italian's reign.

Greg Cunningham signs for Blackburn on loan. Not great really, he'll likely be in competition with Derrick Williams.

Not a bad summer for the Irish boys generally.
Contingent on maintaining fitness, the McCarthy transfer was important. Robinson, McGoldrick, Egan, Stevens, Hourihane are now all PL players. The likes of James Collins are now Championship players. Hopefully the right moves have been made by Cullen, Masterson, Hogan, Arter and Crowley. Good moves by the likes of Luka Connell. Kelly’s move to the Netherlands could help him and hopefully we’ll see him soon. New deal for Travers at Bournemouth. Nothing remarkable, but positive, provided these players play.

He'll be competing with Amari'i Bell for the left-back position. Derrick Williams finished last season partnering Lenihan in central defence, and that is obviously what Mowbray sees as Williams position, going forward. This is underscored by another left-sided centre-back, Mulgrew, being allowed move to Wigan.

It's going to be some culture shock moving from Australia to Saudi Arabia. Don't see it lasting more than 3 months.

The money is probably good, so I'd say he'll find a way to deal with it.

The upward moves highlighted in bold, and most of these players will be reserves at their new clubs. Robinson and Kelly clearly the standouts. A few others (McCarthy, Crowley) making good moves at least from a Ireland point of view. Not great overall though, hopefully our emerging crop can step up over next 3-5 years...
