He did like to get himself noticed. He also managed to get twice as many England caps as the late Peter Osgood, another brilliant centre forward with a similar lifestyle. Ossie died younger, heart attack at 59, and like Frank was not given to endearing himself to international managers.

Marsh tells the story that Alf said to him before a match that he only picked him because of the media pressure and any messing and he will pull him off at half time. Marsh replied “jaysus Alf all we get at Man City is a cup of tea”. He never picked again.

I read Frank was a childhood Burnley supporter, Jimmy McIlroy being his favourite player.

Nah. Was down to a mistrust of fancy dans instilled in English football and reinforced by the Ramsey World Cup win.

Could be argued Le Tisser's lack of caps was (ridiculously) more down to who he played for though.

None of those type of players ever got many England caps. Weren't trusted. Stan Bowles - 5 Rodney Marsh - 9 Tony Currie - 17 Even Hoddle in the 80s (different type of character but mercurial player) didn't get as many as he should have and Le Tissier in the 90s only got a handful. |

Brilliant footballer, unplayable at his peak and astonishing that he had only eight caps for England. He would not have got away with some of the off the field stuff in the modern era and his refusal to wear shin guards left him spending a lot of time with ice buckets due to the kickings he got, but what a player. Galway was one of his numerous clubs, though only very briefly.

RIP. Proper maverick alongside the likes of Stan Bowles when I was a kid. Copied from another forum but this is the jist of the Liverpool story. On his previous lifestyle, Worthington revealed: “I used to be out ‘til all hours boozing it up, but these days, I touch nothing stronger than the odd glass of lager or wine. I like to be tucked up in bed by 10pm.” However, his wild ways cost him a big-money move to Liverpool in 1972. It is understood his transfer to Anfield was put on hold after having high blood pressure during the medical. Reds boss at the time Bill Shankly was unfazed, though, instructing Worthington to take a holiday to Majorca and they’d do the medical when he got back – bad idea! According to the Huddersfield Examiner, Worthington’s holiday consisted of seven days of heavy drinking involving two blonde Swedish females, a night with Miss Great Britain and an ‘encounter’ with another woman at the airport. Worthington then did his medical again and, unsurprisingly, his blood pressure was even higher – the move was off and Shankly sent some flowers to Worthington’s mum. He joined Leicester City for £100,000 later that summer where he enjoyed a successful career, scoring 72 goals in five seasons. Worthington completed his move to Leicester shortly after the Liverpool deal collapsed But if you were wondering whether Worthington had any regrets about missing out on Liverpool, fear not! “There was no point in getting upset,” he said at the time. “I just told myself it was their loss.” |

He was due to sign for Liverpool but failed a fitness test, an STD apparently. Shankly sent him away and told him to come back for another test after he got himself sorted. He had a second test a few weeks later and failed again. So the story goes. Legend. His goal for Bolton against Ipswich is pure artistry....
