Has 6 goals so far for milwall and has cemented a place in the starting 11. After winning league one player of the month for his 3 goals in 4 games. Only just gone 22 so still has plenty of time to work his way up and get into the irish team. Also has a decent scoring record for ireland with 5 goals in 10 games for u21, 1 goal in 2 games with u19 and 3 goals in 5 for the u17

If this is who we are pinning our hopes on then we have a very bleak future.

True, but hopefully it will be better than a League 1 team too... |

Sure according to some people here Paddy Madden & Eoin Doyle aren't good enough - and they get 25 a season at that level.

They are both good at a certain level but it will be a very dark day for Ireland if we have to rely on either. |

The racehorse trainer? I would have thought he'd be too busy at Ballydoyle to have time to play for us

The problem with Ireland is that nobody scores, be they striker, winger or midfielder.
Plenty of teams bigger than Ireland have went to tournaments without a half decent striker but usually there are players who can carry the load in other areas of the pitch.
We have wingers who average about 5 goals in 100 games and central midfielders (Whelan) who go 5 years without scoring goals. |

Exactly why it's good to see one of our kids who can score from centre forward or the wing |

Agreed, but no need to pick on Whelan specifically, McCarthy's goals to games ratio is no better. Meyler gets an odd one or 2 for his club, but hardly prolific either, Quinn even less than that (currently injured anyway), Gibson is nearly always injured but at least has a good strike on a ball the odd occasion he does play, it is a bit early to tell on the likes of Harry Arter (though again, is a good striker of a ball). Hendrick has done well for us though, at least in the assist department, seems to have the knack for being in the right place at the right time, but difficult to pin all yer hopes on a young lad still learning his trade too. Hoolahan, again, plenty credit in the build up play/assists, but not a lot in the goalscoring either. The one that disappoints me most is actually Robbie Brady, we haven't had a decent set piece/free kick specialist since Liam Lawrence left us, and that's 4 years ago now, Brady has the technique and ability to step up to the mark here, but yet we have seen very little evidence of it, bar in the friendly against USA a good while back. Goals from defenders have been very rare too, Coleman scored 7 or 8 last year for Everton, rarely looks like doing so for us, JOS/Clark/Wilson/Keogh all do the normal central defender thing & go up for frees & corners, but none of them seem to have the ability/instinct of SSL or Dunne to nick an odd one, you always thought there might be a chance when one of those 2 went forward. |

Depressing news: Aiden O'Brien scored again today and set up another. Sad day for Irish football.

Good summation and agree with it all. Seems we have ultimately failed to replace those that offered a goal threat in, let's face it, all areas of the pitch. |

Another goal tonight which takes him to 9 for the season in all competitions which isnt bad considering he missed the start of the season through injury. He is also starting to attract interest from some championship and premier league teams.
Also goals tonight for bradley garmston and sean murray in the JPT Trophy
