We discuss Trump’s goal to put the military on the streets, his lust for violence and a modern-day Reichstag fire, and Bill Barr’s decree on “antifa” – an amorphous entity which is being used as a scapegoat and pretext to arrest anti-fascist activists. This tactic of labeling an activist entity as a terrorist group and assigning any dissenting individual membership in that group is common in authoritarian regimes. It’s made all the more horrible by the fact that antifa is short for “anti-fascist” – so yes, what you are seeing is the US government declaring the denouncement of fascism to be a terrorist act. As Andrea's film MR. JONES, available now in the U.S. and soon in Canada, reminds us in the opening clip  –  Reichstag fires are how wannabe dictators consolidate power.

We also discuss prior mass protest movements that we covered in Ferguson and in Ukraine, as well as the failed revolutions of authoritarian states like Uzbekistan, and describe what lessons they hold for Americans now. And we raise our worries about the coronavirus – both its spread, and also how the Trump administration will weaponize it against those expressing dissent.

I'll have a listen later
It would damage this forums' reputation

It's amazing how much norms have been thrown out with the window with this shameful presidency that a right-wing warmonger nicknamed Mad Dog who was sacked by Obama has become the voice of reason and who rightly sees Trump as a fascist threat to the country.

Hopefully his warning will be heeded by military & law enforcement if it comes to Trump refusing to leave office should he lose the election.

Was Trump ever really ahead in the polls? Then allowing for the unusual system, etc., it really isn't something I would be putting faith in.

Imagine hoping for Joe Biden to do anything? What a time to be alive!

Hillary lead by more a month before the elections the last time so I wouldn’t read too much into them now.

She also got nearly three million votes more than him.

True, but when you have the shameless enablers of the Republican controlled Senate, the separation of powers are useless if they're not enforced. While Trump has almost total support among the Republican base, a powerful propaganda media arm in Fox,  none of the Republicans in the house or Senate will turn on him. They are party over country.

The people vote the congressmen in. That said, they have the outdated first past the post and a bit of gerrymandering going on.

Maybe some of these people protesting might link their discrimination to US backed discrimination throughout the world, namely Palestine.

This is not true. US institutions have failed miserably. It was failure on behalf of US institutions, both state institutions such as the FBI and US intelligence, and societal institutions such as the the media that he got to be in the position he is in now in the first place. And their institutions have completely failed to curb him in any way.

Every confederate statue and piece of paraphernalia in the US should be torn down.

Not now though, that will only add to the chaos. Do it six months down the road or something.

The irony of the war, Lee had no slaves but General Grant had one.

There's a confederacy memorial in Galway come to think of it.

Supposedly there's a boom in Confederate monuments on private land in the USA.

That wouldn't go to a failure of the separation of powers though. Thats independent institutions failing in their duties and roles.
