Whatever about the merits of a meaningless friendly against poor opposition, Cullen has been performing very well for Charlton. Our midfield have been dreadful for the last 100 years. If we go with Hendrick, Whelan, McClean, Brady and Hourihane, we know what we are going to get. Why persist with a broken system?
Cullen might not be the next Xavi but he looks to be someone who shows for the ball and uses it fairly effectively. Now, maybe playing for Ireland might knock that out of him but it would be great to at least try something different. I understand the argument against picking Byrne for a qualifier as he is competing at LOI level which isn't up to scratch but Cullen is operating in a sufficiently decent league.

Honestly baffling how glenn whelan is ahead of cullen in the pecking order to be our regular number 6.

Granted glenn had a decent game away in switzerland when we were looking lambs to the slaughter.

Too many times opposition seek our centre mid area out as a weak link and will run and target the spine of our team because they know full well glenn has 0 legs to get around.

Aswell as this, I would argue that whelans performances in general are over rated, the swiss away game for example - he threw himself about tbh more than most and typical irish then to say he was a collosus. A good clever centre midfielder will have the cuteness and positional sense to not be caught out of position.

Josh cullen is a very clever player,  i have been watching him a lot this year at charlton and he is constantly looking over his shoulder with his back to goal to always know how much space he has to manoveure a pass or potentially go forward himself. He has a seriously good footie brain, his range of passing is premiership class also. Way superior than anything we have in the squad currently.

But because its glenn whelan and hes been a good servant he will start monday of course.

Just wait for denmark to start running from deep straight down our middle. mark my words.

Why does it have to be Whelan that's dropped? There's far less justification for Hourihane & Hendrick to start rather than Glenn.

Cullen and Whelan can play in the same team even if Cullen needs to push up a bit.
Wings? They're only the band The Beatles could have been.

Would like to see Cullen start alongside Whelan in midfield, with one of Hourihane or Hendrick too.

Make it a proper dog fight and give Eriksen no space to do his thing.

Ankle injury and he’s ‘in a boot’ according to Bowyer. See how bad it is this week but doesn’t sound promising at all.

Still out and Charlton have fairly dropped down the table since he last played In November.

Hopefully he'll get back fit and make an appearance in the playoff(s). Definitely the type we need for the two potential away games.

Do we know when he's due back? I guess it's difficult to know at this point

Decent match from him. Desperately needed him back with Gallagher now gone. Have been really struggling lately and still not much going forward. Good to at least have Cullen back to help in the midfield battle. Just need someone in front of him now. He had a really good understanding with Gallagher.

Cullen was well regarded by Moyes during his first stint there. Undoubtedly this means that he is in his plans going forward.

Suggestions that Moyes wants to use him next season

He has plenty Championship experience now, so it makes sense.
