He was always hard as nails.

He's great value on Twitter.
It was in a Twitter conversation between himself and the Reverend Richard Coles that I discovered this. Further Google based research proved it to be true. I like him as a commentator and he seems an alright fella. His books were very enjoyable.

ShockedShockedShockedShockedShocked the sizes of countries we see on the standard everyday maps (Mercator projection) arent actually the real proportions as they cant be displayed properly in flat 2D.

Countries that are located closer to the equator are displayed a lot smaller than countries that are furthest from the equator.....

ShockedShockedShockedShockedShocked

example....

Yeah that's why most maps of the globe you buy differ to others. Different scales.

It was, in 1768.

Has a strong nationalist movement there, two thirds of the Corsican Assembly are nationalists, but it is assumed that only about 20% favour full independence and want 'devolution max', as it is called in Britain.

Beautiful place, full of lunatics.

Think it was part of the Republic of Genoa, which was an independent state at the time.

Also would explain the Lunatics part as it's well documented that people from Genoa are a bit to put it nicely mad

The Corsicans certainly wouldn't see themselves as Genovese, but you are obviously right. I didn't want to drag into a debate about Italian identity prior to unification, but Garibaldi wasn't even born until forty years later: in France!

Was a long time ago I was there but do fancy going back. Scenery is unbelievable and the people are brilliant. They have a very independent mindset. The food is incredible too, as you would expect given the location.
