On a personal note, growing up here even as a 8 year old I was aware of an anti Irish stigma and It did affect me and the people I knew, after italia 90 we knew we where as good as anyone and could hold our heads up high, this wasnt done by violence or politics it was all down to a quiet English man. Sad day and a part of my youth is gone forever but il never forget what he done for us.

Sums the man up there and why we did so well under him.

Garth Crooks:  Any regrets Jack?
Jack:  I regret not winning a World Cup or European Championships with Ireland

The man thought we could beat anyone and it transferred to the players

Mad to hear him say we could have won something, I always thought I was delusional, we have fallen so far in recent years, hope we see a generation like that again in my lifetime Cry

He was just direct, authoritative and confident.  His first 5 years int he job he knew exactly what he was doing.  He seemed to question his judgement from 1993 onwards.  That Spanish game really knocked his self belief back imo.  We were taken apart similar to Russia in 2010.  I think that was when he started questioning his own tactics and that doubt transferred to the players imo.

He even said it himself before the 1994 World Cup but said that the German and Holland wins has settled him again.

Same with the Mexican and Dutch losses.  Bound to put you back on your heels a bit.  And again the ageing squad didnt help.  He switched from 4-4-2 to 4-5-1 in that world cup.  Then switched back to 4-4-2 in Anfield upon request from the players.  In his peak he knew what to do and that was it. There was no questioning or asking the players.

4-5-1 came before the World cup, we played it against Holland in a friendly a few months previous
