Barca plan to spend €600m completely re-building the Camp Nou (badly needs it, tbh), with their continuing to play in it for the duration of the work:

Iirc, this was to be financed by €200m Naming Rights, €200m loans and €200m from their own resources.

They might be top of the tree in Spain, even Europe at the moment, but they must be feeling the pressure from the moneybags EPL to stay there.

And if Catalonia should break away from Spain, potentially that could screw them (though I suspect they'll find a way of staying in La Liga).

It will be interesting when Deloittes bring out their annual review of football's finances later this month to see how they rate them. In the meantime, the Soccerex Index ranks them a mere 15th in Europe in terms of "Financial Power".

Some interesting stuff in the paper today.

Apparently Barca were taken by surprise when PSG agreed to meet Neymar's release fee, and his loss cost Bartomeu (club President) a great deal of prestige and popularity amongst their supporters, hence his urgent need to sign Dembele and Coutinho, even if they were "overpriced".

Also explains why Messi was able to hold them to ransom over his new contract, demanding - and receiving - an £88.6m "sweetener" paid over 3 years to re-sign. This was in addition to his annual salary of £31m after tax!

All of which will surely lead to wage inflation at the club.

Nobody's saying they're going to go bust anytime soon. But considering they don't have a Sugar Daddy owner like PSG and Man City etc, even for a huge club like them, their finances may be being squeezed harder than at any time in recent years.

P.S. Would also explain why they dropped their long held antipathy towards on-shirt advertising.

I remember reading something a good while back about Barca and Real's finances, and where it comes from. It seems both of them have it fairly handy with the banks, so loans are easy to come by. Obviously those loans need to be paid back at some stage, but it would make sense how Barca are able to spend so much on more than just transfers

Barca are looking to sell the naming rights to their stadium too. The Nike stadium etc.
TBF Messi is worth every penny.

Lionel Messi marked his 400th Barcelona appearance with a goal as the La Liga leaders maintained their nine-point advantage with victory over Levante.

His 365th La Liga goal equalled Gerd Muller's record for goals in a single one of Europe's top five leagues.

Phenomenal achievement, leaving him just two behind Jimmy Greaves' 367 top five League goals total (528 games).

Of course Messi has played far fewer games, but as against that, Greaves never played for so all-conquering team as Barca, in fact he never won a League winner's medal:
Chelsea - 124 goals in 157 League games;
AC Milan - 9 goals in 12 League games;
Spurs - 220 goals in 321 League games;
WHU - 13 goals in 38 League games.

Most impressive of all, he scored his 100th League goal whilst still only 20 years and 290 days old (and that for a mediocre Chelsea team) and all during a long career when defenders kicked the sh*te out of forwards, whilst the referees looked on:

How many would he have scored had he been at Barca instead of Messi, or even Spurs instead of Kane?

Apparently not:
"While [at Milan], he enjoyed his time on the pitch, despite hating the defensive Italian style, but his nine goals contributed to AC Milan winning the Serie A title, although Jimmy did not play enough games to merit a medal."

Barca looking like they are going to lose away to Espanyol in the derby. One nil down with two mins to play. Messi had a peno saved earlier. This is the first leg in the CDR. I can see Barca getting the job done in the home leg

Barca cruising against Betis away. Victory is assured which means that they will have only dropped 6 points after 20 games. Not bad

13/2 for the Champions League while Man City are 7/2 favourites is a bit strange.

I'd guess at this stage it's because Barcelona have a tougher fixture than Man City in the last 16.

What a turnaround it's been since La Liga started. Barca looked dreadful against Real in the SuperCopa.
Valverde has worked wonders with their defence. The strategy seems to be to contain the opposition early on and not concede which hasn't been too easy on the eye. However, generally speaking, their second half performances have been superb.

Philippe Coutinho made his debut for Barcelona as they beat Espanyol to reach the Spanish Cup semi-finals last night.

Coutinho came on with 22 minutes to play, by which time Barca were already 2-0 up in reply to last week's 1-0 first-leg defeat.

he actually slips while he is shooting and he hits it of his other foot which looped it up. Helped it in the end.
