Hola, que tal? Tonight @ 7:30pm Irish time a slate painting of Patrick O'Connell from the roof of the old Old Trafford painted by the Mancunian Artist Tony Denton will be presented to Lorenzo Ferrer in the Presidential Lodge at the Estadio Benito Villamarin at half time in the Real Sociedad match. Ferrer was the last manager to win a trophy @ Betis. Our group from Carlow,Dublin,Manchester,Leeds and Glasgow have made it(a story in itself) to Seville for tonight and are guests of the club. Spanish film crew are in situ to film for 'Don Patricio' film which premieres in Dublin on May 14th and Belfast May 16th. This unique painting joins the La Liga trophy won by Patrick in 1935 and a bust of Pat which our group presented last year. Event and film covered by BBC radio over the weekend and Talksport yesterday. Thanks to Dan Griffin Irish Times for the mention on the live forecast this morning - see 9:02 and Real Betis official twitter account - https://twitter.com/RealBetis/status/968951272392089601 Anyway 'Níl aon sneachta í Seville' - 'we are the teatime tribe and we are over friendly' Stay safe people!! |

You asked if I'd be anyone from history, fact or fiction, dead or alive:
I said "I'd be Tony Cascarino, circa 1995" |

Sevilla won the title the season after he left them. Any idea why he left? As there is a gap of 1 year between returning to RS?

All revealed in the film you have to remember O'Connell was very much on the run from Francoists after he returned to Spain in 1940.
All those who had gone to Mexico were banned for six years, imprisoned or shot dead. Patrick was back in the country after six months following his departure from Barca actually on the day Franco has his victory parade. But not quietly he won the second division title with Betis and then crossed the divide the first Betis man to manage Sevilla in 1942. Funnily we filmed at the Betis cafe where Betis players to this day go near their stadium for coffee O'Connell was the only Sevilla manager ever allowed in.He used to read his paper there every morning as Sevilla manager. But yes it would have been incredible if he had been able to remain on in '46 but if you speak to the top brass and historians at Sevilla they see that team as the team he built. It would have been a third La Liga title as Barca see the Mediterranean league as a la liga title he won in 1937. Can you imagine having to take different routes around the city of Seville to work every morning to avoid the enemy? Hope you lads enjoy it. |

This coming 25th May, the Catalan Dignity Commission (working on the recovery of the anti-Francoist memory and annulment of Franco’s crimes) is to donate a specially commissioned painting associated with the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Ebro (1938) to the Civil War Museum in Gandesa. In a painting carried out by artist Pere Piquer, the moment is remembered when International brigader, Micheál O’Riordan, from the Connolly Column of the 15th Brigade, crossed the Ebro at Vinebre. This occurred on the morning of the 25th July 1938. He bore a Catalan flag on his shoulder. His brave unit advanced to face the might of Franco’s Hitler and Mussolini-backed army. The Dignity Commission does not want to let this opportunty of commemorating this heroic feat slip by without honouring those involved. Though far away in time, we feel that it is an instance of solidarity, democratic zeal and sacrifice that should be dearly remembered.
For this event, and to cover the expenses of the execution and placement of the painting –which shows the group of International Brigaders rowing across the river– we would like to put to your consideration the possibility of helping our crowdfunding project with the Catalan crowdfunders “Verkami” with a contribution. There is an English version of the project at: http://vkm.is/oriordan For any enquiries, you can also mail the organizers at: verkamidignitat@gmail.com
Thanks so very much. Go raibh maith agat go mór!
For the Dignity Commission,
Pep Cruanyes, Pilar Rebaque and Toni Strubell
