none of them were available on free to air

Really?

Hardly huge games tho.

When big football games are on they are watched by more people than big rugby games. RTE can try all they want, it will never change.

No chance if we had a qualifier against either of those teams last year would it have beaten any of the rugby matches. It was torture watching us play

The home game against Denmark was the third most watched show on RTE in 2017: https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2018/0109/932142-rte-had-top-20-most-viewed-tv-shows-in-ireland-in-2017

1.03million watched it, more than any rugby game in 2018

Rugby viewing figures are constant year on year.

Exactly. My question was clearly rhetorical but assume he was trying to insinuate that the biggest game in 8 years (could argue either way about the Euros games being bigger) is representative of what the viewing figures for a run of the mill qualifier would be with Ireland’s worst team in at least 11 years but probably decades.

Let’s just be thankful we didn’t have to face France last year in a qualifier

The most watched sporting event on RTE last year was a football match.  More people watched the England football team (v Croatia) than the Ireland rugby team.

Don't forget there was a total sellout in the Aviva last year for a football match.  Liverpool v Napoli sold out within minutes.   Manchester United obviously would have as well (not getting into that debate).  The only other team that could come close to selling out the Aviva these days is England.  CryCry

Football is still very strong in this country but our national team is at a low ebb.

If he does get another job he would be foolish to bring Roy Keane with him. He would need someone to do the thinking for him this time.  They are football's version of the Driscoll Brothers.

Could you imagine his first interview all nostalgic, the fans would love it. 10 games later when spouting the same oddball crap they'd be worried

This would be fantastic.  He would bring back the Clough style.  Green jumper at the ready.
