Vienna has a fantastic transportation which i am sure we will be using flat out, at 2.10€ for a single ticket the cost will add up so its well worth buying one of these 24,48,72 hour tickets depending on how long you are staying, will save a few quid no doubt. they are available at all Metro stations and the machine can be changed into English,do not buy them from the machines on the metro as they only sell single tickets, you can also not buy any ticket at all as you may not even be checked but if you are the 100€ + fine will be seen as wasted beer money

Just a very tiny correction there: ON the Metro trains themselves, NO tickets can be bought at all, you have to but them from verding machines in the entrance Halls of the stations. On trams and buses, you can buy tickets, but like Lilly wrote, only single ride ones ...

Just having a thread on a Metro system, shows how inefficient,
archaic, and expensive Dublin's transport system is. I would love this
city to have a Metro system. Sadly, it seems about as likely as winning
the World Cup.
Vienna's metro ticket checks are rare, and with a full train before/after games, non-existent. The only guaranteed check is on the CAT double decker train between the airport and city centre. It is also 24 hours at weekends, a train every 15 minutes during the night, at no extra cost. Puts the "bus every 2 hours" ripoff Nitelink in the shade. However, Vienna's transport system has one major flaw. The metro stations and city's main train stations in the same place, go by different names. It is also home to the strangest, most chaotic airport I've ever been in. Security scanners are at every single departure gate rather than one spot, while collecting bags upon arrival involves a roughly 10 minute walk via the main departures area and side-alleys. Impatient fans going through there will find it a testing experience. |

Can´t say that I find Vienna airport more confusing then its Dublin counterpart, but maybe I should try Dublin sober at one point to be fair about this. The last time I was there I tried to make my way through after 10 pints of the black stuff in a friends bar in Sandycove ... :-)
You are right about the per-gate security controls and about leading the arriving Schengen-passengers through a shared little shopping area with the departing ones before you get your luggage, I think both are measure to try to get the people to do a bit more shopping at the airport ... But you are right about the train stations and the matching underground stations having different names, that is pain in the arse, and is based on a n old controversy between the federal railway authorities and the municipal public traffic coordinators. The typical combinations you guys might come across (most likely on your way in from e.g. the airport) are: (Trainstation - underground station) Wien Mitte - Landstrasse Wien Nord - Praterstern Wien Meidling - Längenfeldgasse Wien Morzinplatz (on the airport bus) - between "Schwedenplatz" (U1 & U4) and "Schottenring" (U2 & U4) But I am sure this will not ruin your trip ... All stations have vending machines which can be switched English as language of operation and except cash in coins and notes as well as bankomat and credit-cards, but ticket booths with human operators can only be found at larger stations, usually where e.g. underground lines connect or if there is a link to the regular train system.
From the discussion I get the impression there won´t be many doing that, but those arriving at Vienna Airport and taking the City Airport train into the City can also buy their tickets together with the CAT-ticket: http://www.cityairporttrain.com/Infos/Tarifubersicht-(1).aspx

Yes, there is only one ticket system for all forms of public transport within the city limits of Vienna, tram, bus, underground, S-Bahn, regional trains etc. ..
