Who had the bets with Hans that Man U would finish ahead of Spurs?
Was it Bhob, Benny?

Jaysus that was a very welcome result today. A vey topsey turvey season has Spurs in champions league next season. It was hard got.

Huge result for them with the mounting debt. A very lucrative final appearance is badly needed but that looks unlikely.

The mounting debt. They took out a loan to build a stadium :). Standard stuff always qualifying for CL IS welcome. But this isn’t Leeds we are talking about

They wouldn't have debt anything like Man Utd. Qualification means funds are justified to strenghten the squad and cannot be denied with the extra revenue from participation in CL. Pochettino has a much better hand to negotiate with both Levy to release funds and with potential recruits who want to play in champions league. Looking forward to seeing who they manage to bring in.

Seems a lot until you release eg that in 2017/18, Spurs made a world record £113m profit: And that was while paying £500k a game rent to Wembley, but without a run to the CL Semi-Finals etc. Nor does it count the contracts signed to host NFL games, also Saracens RFC's annual "Big Game": then there are the naming rights for the new stadium which, if/when confirmed, should comfortably bring in another 9 figure sum. Plus it looks as if Eriksen will be off in the summer, with Levy claiming he won't go for less than £120m! If so, I can't believe that Poch won't be given a competitive war chest for next season. Meanwhile, the stadium debt is apparently all front-loaded, so that they expect to have paid it off* by 2022. Basically, Spurs are rolling in it. * - Any similarity between that plan and John Delaney's to pay off the AVIVA by 2020 is entirely coincidental, if not entirely mental.

None of Spurs, Arsenal or United deserve top 4. All did their best, United and Arsenal just edging it to gift the others the spot

You don't just get into a Top 4 position based on the last few weeks of the season. Just looking at a few stats there. Spurs are third for most league wins, they have the 3rd best defensive record, 3rd best goals differential and only City, Liverpool and Arsenal have scored more goals. They've earned their top 4 finish. I won't even mention where they played their home games for all bar 4 league games or who they bought in the last 2 transfer windows

Nonsense If you finish 4th after 38 games that is where you deserve to finish, simple as that. The league table never lies.

It's hard to know alright, in saying that some of the stuff that gets posted on here from regular posters leaves a lot to be desired at the same time
Personally, I think Spurs with 1 or 2 signings in January would have nailed 3rd comfortably but bad planning to a point really has made them sweat to finish 4th which seems crazy after their first 30 PL games.

Who do you recommend the Premier League give 3rd and 4th to then? Watford, Wolves, Leicester?

The difference between Spurs and Arsenal/Man U (Chelsea to a lesser extent), is that Arsenal and Man U ran out of nerve (i.e. "bottled" it), whereas Spurs just ran out of legs.
And the reason those teams bottled it was because deep down, too many of their players knew they weren't good enough, or didn't care enough, when it came to the crucial games in March and April etc. Whereas Spurs showed eg in the CL that they had the belief and the desire to compete with the very best. But in recent weeks they've been hampered by injuries and suspensions etc, and have had to start players who weren't fully fit (Sissoko, Wanyama, Rose, Dier, Winks etc) and/or had lost their edge (Eriksen & Dele in particular). All of which is a reflection of their failure to buy fresh players in the last two windows , meaning that the squad was too small. This wasn't helped by also going on extended runs in the domestic cups (unlike eg Liverpool), whilst also having to play "catch-up" in their CL campaign after a slow start. But do not forget that by the half-way mark of the EPL (19th game), Spurs were second in the League and people were calling it a three horse race. Of course it wasn't able to be maintained, but it was a lack of depth, not quality which made the difference - not something you could say for either Arsenal or Man U. (Meanwhile, if Chelsea lose Hazard, and the transfer ban is upheld, you could be saying the same about them next season?).

A WUM because I think the three teams did their best to throw away the Champions League spots, with United and Arsenal doing so Fair enough

Strong team out tonight. They know what they have to do and just give it everything.
Hopefully with champions league secured for next season it takes a little pressure off. |
