Not exactly true. First they withdrew for a period when the Brandywell was deemed unsuitable on security grounds (eg the Ballymena United bus was burnt out on a visit) and they had been required to play "home" games in Coleraine. They played junior football for a period and when they reapplied some years later, the IL still wouldn't sanction games at the Brandywell. DCFC eventually applied to join the LOI in 1985, which was successful, but only after receiving special dispensation from both the IFA and FIFA (UEFA?). So whatever the rights/wrongs of the DCFC situation back then, the IFA would not now be willing to grant another dispensation (why would they?), nor is there any reason for FIFA/UEFA to do so. P.S. I may be wrong, but DCFC may technically still be a member of the IFA, though playing in the LOI under the jurisdiction of the FAI? I do know that their womens team plays in the NIWFL: |

No Northern club can join the league. Alton United were kicked out. Derry City is an exception because they were refused entry to the Irish league.

The IFA said they'll make up their mind next year (serious).

Starting to take shape amazing work by Danny Devenney and Marty Lyons - 2 sides complete of the stadium facing the Falls Road - Messi has come to West Belfast!! smile emoticon
Stunning archive film discoveries of Belfast Celtic Park Two stunning pieces of film from the 1920’s, showing events at Belfast Celtic Park on the Donegall Road, have been discovered by the Belfast Celtic Society. Recent searches on the British Pathe website have unearthed footage of a pony trotting race at Celtic Park during the Truce in the Tan War in July 1921. At this time, Belfast Celtic had withdrawn from football due to political violence and pony trotting would have been a welcome sporting release for people in west Belfast at a time of high tension. A second, five minute long piece of archive, from the ITN Source website, shows the amazing sight of the 1925 Celtic Carnival winding its way from the city centre through west Belfast to Celtic Park. Organised to provide funds for Belfast Celtic’s return to football after the conflict of the early 20’s, the carnival drew tens of thousands of participants and spectators to Celtic Park, where revelers enjoyed a funfair. The money raised from this event was used to build the Willof.airy Stand, which loomed over the Iveagh district until the ground’s demolition in the early 1980’s. You can read the rest of this original article and see the films referred to here. |
Madferret wrote: Not very well known, but IRA leader Oscar Traynor played in goal for Belfast Celtic. Led a full life; a goalkeeper, saw action during Easter week, and both The Tan War and Civil War (on the Republican side), a Sinn Féin TD, Minster for Defence during The Emergency, Minister for Justice, and President of the FAI Most people know there is a road and football Cup named after him but I wonder does this great man have a statue either in Dublin or Belfast? |
Gashley Grimes wrote: For those interested shirts donated by Figo,Kahn,Maldini,Beckham and others are on display at the museum at the Park Centre it opens Thurs evening and Saturday mornings from 11am. Danny Devenney award winning belfast artist will be painting a spectacular mural this summer telling the O'Connell story from Belfast Celtic via Hillsborough,Boothferry Park,Old Trafford Seville to Barcelona.
Ignition Mgmt Noel Gallagher's Company have given us permission to use live lyrics from the song Cast No Shadow by Oasis - 'When you take my Soul Don't take my Pride...'
Given Patrick's success came in Barcelona and Seville the words will be translated into Catalan and Spanish and appear on the mural.
As well as raising awareness of this story we hope this piece will be of inspration to young people who harbour football/sporting ambitions.
The mural will be unveiled on Aug 7th as part of Feile Belfast. |
