2002:
Russia 4-2 Ireland, Moscow The first game of the 2004 EC campaign, saw Ireland concede 4 goals in a competitive game for the first time since 1985. 5,000 Irish fans travelled to see the game, and like all earlier visits to Moscow, the result was the same. Brendan Menton later described it as one of the most badly organised games he had ever come across, and the trip itself had it's fair share of issues. But Moscow is a fascinating city, and once you got past the headwrecking bureaucracy, it wasn't a complete write off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTc9s1Fx30c |

yes. It was a disaster from the players & fans point of view. Some lads were picked up by police for not having a passport.. they wanted €100 or $100. Other lads got hassle on tubes, and a few lads from town got badly beaten outside Mc Donalds.. Food was crap

2007:
Slovakia 2-2 Ireland, Bratislava Another low point of the 2008 campaign. Not only did we lose 2 leads, and 2 points in the last minute, but the coach named a suspended player on the sub bench. Fortunately he wasn't used, and we got to keep the paltry point we picked up, which made qualification for the tournament an hour across the border the following summer, even more uphill. As for the trip itself, it rained when we got there, it rained some more while we were there, and continued to fall almost until ko. It was a bandwagon trip, but some of the fans came out of the Square with a bit more damage than just a few pints. A thoroughly miserable trip in a bland country from beginning to end. |

1981:
Holland 2-2 Ireland, Rotterdam After the result against Belgium, Ireland needed a win over a Dutch side in transition. We got a point from our final away game of the campaign. 1987: Ireland 2-1 Luxembourg, Dublin After sell outs in the earlier home group games, just 18,000 turned up for the visit of the bottom side in the group. They took the lead after half an hour only for Stapleton to equalise two minutes later. A draw looked the most likely outcome until McGrath volleyed home a late winner. It kept the campaign alive for the visit of Bulgaria next month. 1993: Ireland 2-0 Lithuania, Dublin On a grey, wet late summer afternoon, two goals in half an hour won our fourth game in a row, and set up nicely the visit of Spain next month, as Lithuania's first UEFA campaign came to an end. With the game over as a contest, Jack asked the players to ease up in the second half, and not pick up any bookings ahead of the Spain game. In theory, it was a smart move, in practice, it could have been better. |

Ireland 3-0 N. Ireland The Derby was over with 3 early goals in a comprehensive victory, in a key game in the successful qualification bid for USA 94. One of the other highlights was a poignant minute silence to commemorate all the victims of the conflict, a proper minute silence, not the few seconds applause at games now. |

Bulgaria 2 - 1 Ireland Jack Charlton's first competitive defeat in rain-soaked Sofia. To rub it in, the winning goal came from a penalty for a foul well outside the box. It was Ireland's third defeat in three, and the latest diabolical error given against us in Sofia. The place may not have changed an inch since, but we got a historic point on our next visit in 2009. |

2011:
Ireland 2-0 Macedonia Skopje Robbie Keane had a Macedonia for the right reasons as we collected our first win in Skopje. After the tears of 99, two first half goals kept us on course for the European Championships, knocked the home side out, and saw their coach eventually replaced by John Toshack. Our fans tickets were 1000 times more expensive than the home fans, but we were the ones going away singing from Skopje at the end of the evening. |

One of a couple of posts on this thread where you've managed (what is for you, anyway) the unprecedented feat of making a post without whining like an embittered aul wan. Congratulations chief! |
