It's also worth saying about Jim McLean, for all his legendary angry antics, he was at heart a deeply principled man.

McLean was offered the chance to manage Rangers (whom he had supported as boy) in the early eighties. He also really wanted the job.

Everything went well in the discussions between Rangers and Mclean until the latter made it crystal clear that in the event he became Rangers manager one thing had to change. McLean demanded that the "nae cafflicks" tradition (then rigidly enforced at Ibrox) must be abolished.

Rangers immediately abandoned the talks with McLean. He lost his chance of getting his dream job but he came out of the whole thing pretty well.

You also didn't want to ask Wee Jim any "stupid questions" or this happened ....

I don't buy that the ref was bribed in that match, Roma probably tried to alright but the ref didn't give any big decisions against Dundee United

The goals were all legit, Dundee United sh*t the togs and barely attacked

The son of the Roma president admitted an attempt to bribe the French referee.  There is no evidence that he accepted it.  Michel Vautrot was a highly respected referee at the time.

Bribing referees was not unusual at the time.  Anderlecht were punished by UEFA for bribing a referee in 1984.  Eoin Hand and Mickey Walsh were convinced Raul Nazare was bribed for our game in Brussels in 1981.  Suffice to say even if Tony was handed the whistle for Saturday's Old Firm game Brussels 81 would remain the most badly refereed game in history.

I haven't watched the Roma game in years so couldn't pass judgement on it.  Great comebacks were more common in those days in any case.  Home advantage did count for a bit more with huge noisy passionate crowds making a difference.  I recall Roma being victims of an an amazing comeback a few years before when Carl Zeiss Jena overturned a 3-0 first leg defeat with a 4-0 win in Jena.

Isn't David Martindale's recent story a fantastic one? A real triumph for rehabilitative and even restorative justice, and a justified determination that he is "a fit and proper person" by the SFA.

15 years ago his life was in ruins. In advance of going to prison he commenced his university education, which he finished on release, but it showed his intent to move forward post release. He was volunteering with Livingston, progressing through the ranks, before acting as David Hopkins' assistant, and even turning down the managerial job due to personal concerns about his lack of experience (an incredibly aware and honest approach). He ultimately took the managerial job, and now is in 5th position in the SPL and has a League Cup final on the horizon, with a Manager of the Month award in his locker.

It shows that even before he started his sentence he was intent on turning his life around. Football is an incredibly corporatist sport, and somebody like Martindale may have struggled to break in the way he did, especially after his release. Its a very interesting story.

Looks like Hibs selling Nesbitt (£2mill Birmingham) & Porteous (£1mill Millwall)

Great deals for all involved

Hopefully Hibs now sign Shane Duffy & Leigh Griffiths to replace them

A Nigerian lad who worked in a local shop in London was trying to explain it to me years ago. Completely bizarre.
