Last competitive day today, Roglic still has the most of 3 minutes on Valverde and more than 3 minutes on Quintana. If this were the TDF, it would be over already for definite, but it isn't completely certain here. Same Bennett had another 2nd yesterday, pipped by a solo breakaway rider by 5 seconds but came in 1st in what was left of the bunch, which wasn't much at that stage.

Has an outside chance of the points jersey, he's up to 2nd in that category, but would have to win a few intermediate sprints today before the climbing starts, win the final stage tomorrow, and also hope Roglic doesn't pick up any more points today. The first 2 things are not unlikely, but all 3 are probably beyond his control. Will be the favourite to win tomorrow if he survives today, it would cap off an excellent race for him.

Sam Bennett won his second stage of the race earlier, made a lot easier by a fair chunk of his rivals getting involved in a late crash about 1km before the finish. Gave it a bit of a burst of pace, looked around him with a few hundred metres to go, nobody within yards of him, freewheeled across the line. In horse racing parlance, won pulling up. A week to go, probably 2 other stages he should contest for and likely win.

Roglic still upfront, healthy lead and really only a crash, sickness or something as odd as fcuk will stop him now. Given the race that's in it, something as odd as fcuk is probably the likliest thing that can happen to prevent him winning.

TV cameras pick up rooftop marijuana plants during Vuelta

Updated / Wednesday, 4 Sep 2019 19:21
The Vuelta is one of the three major European professional cycling stage racesThe Vuelta is one of the three major European professional cycling stage races

Spanish police have seized marijuana plants growing on an apartment rooftop after they were spotted by a TV helicopter filming the Vuelta, the country's top bicycle race.

As the helicopter tracked the cyclists during the final moments of the 8th stage of the race on Saturday, the camera panned over the rooftop in Igualada in Catalonia in northeastern Spain revealing the plants spread across two plantations.

No arrests were made when the police burst in to remove the plants and officers are still looking for the owners of the plantation, she added.

The Vuelta is one of the three major European professional cycling stage races, along with the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

It is also well known to cycling, and scenery, aficionados for long overhead shots.

Stage won by Nikalas Arndt, who came out the best of a sprint after being part of a long term breakaway group. This race has different rules to the TDF, some French bucko who rolled in 11th out of the breakaway group amassed enough time to take over the leader's jersey for tomorrow at least, after which he will almost certainly lose it again, in fact he may not even stay in the top 20 tomorrow.

Just wouldn't happen in the TDF that the GC contender's teams would ever let that happen a week into the race, this thing is a lot more relaxed, for whatever reason.

Stage won by a 39 year old Valverde who, along with Roglic, climbed the final climb in a record time. Given the race it is, that isn't really surprising. Tyler Hamilton once said of the Vuelta something along the lines of '' You couldn't get busted in Spain even if you had a syringe taped to your forehead'' , though somehow, Chris Froome still managed to get busted (and then get away with it)  in 2017, which says something too.

Anyway, on to tomorrow, one of those stages that might be a sprint finish and a chance for Bennett to regain the points jersey after Quintana took it over today, or could be won by a solo De Gendt type breakaway, its hard to know. Now that Majka has made the top 5, Bora might try conserve some energy for later in the race and not be as preoccupied with trying to set the stage up for Bennett.

Roche crashes out along with one of the GC favourites Uran and a few more. Big enough crash, a few more got up & made it to the end of the stage, but there will probably be a couple more abandonments tomorrow when the injuries take their toll. Bennett held onto the points jersey.

Roche loses leader jersey to Lopez, but put in a good effort all the same, probably didn't lose as much time as expected. Drops to 5th about a minute back.  Stage won by climber types who took most of the points, Quintana picked up a few points in an earlier big climb but didn't finish high enough to take the points jersey, so Bennett holds on to it. Until tomorrow anyway, though with a flat stage on Saturday, every chance of taking it back again should he lose it tomorrow.

He went the wrong way around a roundabout and lost position, the other side was shorter. it will be a few days before he gets the chance again.

If Quintana is on form and wins another stage or two he could take the points jersey

Lost out by very little, commented on Twitter that 'team found it hard today' - dunno if that's code for 'they weren't able to get me in the right position' . Think there's still no doubt that he's the fastest man in the race. Roche stays in red as well.

Bennett just beaten by the smallest of small margins today, was just too far back when he got going, still he takes the points jersey.

Won by nearly 3 bike lengths as well, which is an awful lot in sprinting terms. At that rate, it doesn't look like he is really beatable in any sprint finish stage (unless illness, crash etc), which might mean a lot of the other sprinter's teams won't be as bothered about chasing breakaways if they think it is only for his benefit. Then again, there's always other teams who don't have men in the break willing to do some chasing, particularly later in the race if they have yet to win a stage themselves.

BoraH will be busy lads if they are also trying to get Majka into GC contention as well, probably a bit early for that yet though, which means Bennett should win tomorrow if it finishes in another sprint.

Sam Bennett takes the stage win today and Nico still in the leaders jersey, a great day for Irish cycling.

Bennett should be the sports person of the year after his results, though may need a TdF stage win for the general public to appreciate it

Ya, saw the finish, he was hoping someone else would chase Quintana as he clearly fancied himself as the strongest sprinter of the 6 (which he proved by coming 2nd). Find it strange that this race seems to operate to different rules to the TDF, the only time you would ever see 5 TDF contenders out front together in a stage of the TDF is at the top of a mountain, in today's stage, 5 of the 6 breakaway riders were GC men.

Probably being a bit unfair to Roche by saying he isn't a GC contender , he did finish 5th in 2013, but he's unlikely to be in the final shakeup, especially given the fact he isn't the designated team leader, and also out of contract with Sunweb after this race or soon enough after it anyway.

Great finish to today’s stage, done think anyone was really expecting the GC guys to take it up today. Roche did really well to get into the move, that made him virtual leader on the road and also the most to lose as a result. He was right not to chase Quintana even if it meant no stage win but did what he needed to take the overall lead. Hopefully he will keep the jersey for a few days.

Vuelta starts today, Primoz Roglic favourite for it, but fcuk knows which unlikely characters will challenge him for it, this particular GT has a history of suspect lads (even by cycling standards) coming out of non existent form all year to be right up there fighting for the podium. One edition even had a fella come out of absolutely nowhere to be the best cyclist in the world overnight, so anything much is possible.

A fella who is in genuine form, and has been all season, is our own Sam Bennett, he should be worth a bet on each and any of the flatter stages- though the Vuelta hasn't too many outright flat sprinters stages and it's rare enough anyone wins more than 3 sprint finishes. The odds won't be too generous either, but against that, there aren't too many other top class sprinters lining up (most of them did the TDF instead) against him, so if he keeps his form, he could be in for at least 2 and maybe up to 4 wins.

A slightly outside bet for the points jersey too, he'll challenge for it for certain, but the scoring here is different to the TDF and puts more emphasis on climbing, the jersey isn't often won by sprinters. Nico Roche is lining up as well, it's a race he usually goes well in, he'll want to win a stage and will likely challenge for one or 2 of them, the difficulty is knowing which ones.
