How can it be a loan if they've cancelled his contract.

But he won;t be in Madrid post the summer.

Yeah but still doesn't make it a loan deal

Doherty was contracted until 2024 so surely gets a pay off to cancel his contract.

He must have agreed some kind of termination deal, maybe half his remaining wages or something, there's no way he'd let a full year of Spurs wages go just to sign for 6 months in Madrid.

Spurs realised late on they were at their loan limit so had to terminate his contract in order for him to leave

I’ve no idea of the rules and the deals in/out of spurs today but you’d think they’d have that base covered/contingency in place!!

They were going to make it a loan deal until the opportunity to lend Spence to Rennes occurred. That would have taken them over their 8 permitted foreign loans.

So they might have kept MD, except that with Porro due to sign (has signed?), and Royal seemingly preferred by Conte as back-up, MD would only have been 3rd choice RB/RWB, or maybe even 4th choice if/when Spence comes back from Rennes?

In which case it will have been a financial decision on the club's part i.e. cut back the wage bill.

And then there's MDs position to consider as well . I imagine he was well up for the move, if only for 6 months and without any guarantee of playing, rather than sitting on his arse at Spurs.

Oh and a pay-off from Spurs, while he will be able to negotiate a signing on fee as a free agent at his next club, which might even be Atletico, if he impresses there.

I'd say this is good news all round - Good Luck to him! Thumbs Up

I'm anticipating a lot of "Matt Doherty makes the bench" *fistbump* *Ireland Flag* tweets from Kenny's Kids in the next four months.

If there's 2 right backs there already then why sign the boy Dockerty?

Llorente is a midfielder who has covered right back and he’s out injured at the moment anyway.

They play 4-4-2 and 3-5-2, when they play 3-5-2 Molina plays RCB and Llorente plays RWB. Doherty will be in contention for that position too.

Molina has not once played RCB this season! He’s a right back or wing back.

I can't imagine Doherty will cry too many tears for them, they scapegoated him in his first 18 months or so. Probably the right thing anyway, Conte only ever played him grudgingly and was always looking for any reason to drop him when he did get a chance, he seemed to have more time for Emerson bizarrely so unsurprising he's the one to stay.
We're decent enough..

Went on Kenny's Kids just now for the laugh and the most recent tweet refers to "silky playmaker" Harry Vaughan, previously of National League club Oldham.
