Plus Spurs have a Europa Lge game on Thursday. Mourinho is clearly targeting that competition, so whether Doherty plays or not will tell us what he thinks of him. Personally, I couldn't have seen JM sanctioning the transfer unless he rated him, while I think they were trying to offload Aurier during the window, but (predictably enough!) couldn't get anyone to take him off our hands at anything approaching his Spurs wage.

Matt will start over 30 games for Spurs this season and it’s a shortened season so most weeks will also have mid week games.
That’s prob the best situation for Ireland. You want somebody playing regular football but not 50+ games.

Looking bang average again today.
Jose is a mad bastard. Why sign someone who's best (probably only real asset) is his attacking instinct, then shackle him? You a have a so-so right full who just does a lot of passing back and sideways. |

I hope he does well at Spurs, I like him, he comes across as very well spoken and intelligent. His every second word isn't "obviously" and a bunch of other clichés.

Come off it. I'm a Spurs fan and obviously an Irish fan, so of course I want Matt do well, but he's been a shadow of the player he was at Wolves. Gets an assist and clean sheet against West Brom. Brilliant, but where you even watch the game or Matt since he joined Spurs?

Yes I have watched him and the game. Clearly he isn't getting forward as much as before but no harm for him to get an education in the defensive side of things, playing at RB rather than RWB, from one of the best coaches in the world. Certainly seeing as we aren't moving to the 5 at the back, this is good for us.

He signed on the last day of August, so missed Spurs' pre-season. Since when he's played 6 x PL games (W4 D1 L1), 4 x EL games and 5 x internationals - all squeezed into two months. All this came straight after a season where he played 52 games, the last of them on 11 August. Tbh, with a schedule like that, it's a wonder he's able to perform any kind of a way. Come back when he's played 26 PL games, ideally with a couple of days off somewhere in between.

Granted he has not been the attacking threat he was at Wolves but he will be playing the role/system his manager wants him to play. The fact that he plays every 2nd game shows Jose is happy with his performances. Jose would have no problem dropping an underperforming player from the squad or somebody who is leaking goals. He is doing okay in a back 4 which he needs to get used to. |
