England's problem isn't so much that they don't have the players to win it (Greece didn't have the players for example) it's that they don't have a team to win it. You don't necessarily need world class players in every position to win a tournament, what you need is a team, players who play for each other, and their manager and who are willing to put aside personal issues for the good of the team, England haven't had that for years.
There's no team spirit in the England squad. They say there is but there isn't, there are loads of divisions and cliques in the team and they don't put their differences aside for the sake of the team.
The second problem is that they haven't had a manager possibly since Bobby Robson who has been willing to stand up to the media and to play who he wants to play in the position he wants them to play in.
Look at Gerrard and Lampard, every England manager for more than 10 years has been trying to find a way to play them together. It's simple, if they can't play together then drop one of them, but they're all too chicken to do it.
Say what you want about Trap, you might not like his style or the players he chooses, but he knows what players he wants in what position and if they don't want to do what he wants them to do then they're out, and if the media don't like it tough sh*t. It worked for Charlton and it works for Trap, England have not had a manager who has done that properly for years. Hoddle tried it, Venables tried it, Capello sort of half tried it but at the end of the day they all got crucified by the media and pushed out.
Robson got crucified by the media on a regular basis but he stood his ground and got them to a semi final of a World Cup (20 years later the same people who crucified him were leading the plaudits). For England to succeed they need a manager who will not only put the players in their place, but who will take zero sh*t from the media and who can ride out the storm of abuse that he gets.
The first thing any England manager should do is get rid of Terry, he is poison. He's one of the reasons for divisions in the squad and he's one of the players who has too much influence, no manager can do things his way as long as Terry's around.
They also don't have a plan for what they want in a manager (to be fair neither do we), since Robson (or before) most of their managers have been hired and fired by the media. Taylor didn't play with enough flair, he pissed Lineker off and failed to qualify... so they went with Venables, but he was a bit dodgy... so they got Hoddle in, but he was mental and did too much thinking... so, get some passion in there... Keegan, too passionate doesn't think enough, bit mental... Erikson, no no too foreign... but he's doing OK, well then he's too foreign and keeps shagging birds, get some proper English values... McLaren, too f**king clueless, get someone who has been succesful, Capello, too bloody foreign again doesn't speak the lingo... Now they're back to the he has to be English thing.
