He was a dreadful holding midfielder. He played in midfield in a league cup game for United against Burnley in December 2002 and did ok. For the next few years, our old friend Cathal Dervan (now one of Delaney's crew), devoted plenty of column inches to the idea of O'Shea playing for Ireland in central midfield.

Brian Kerr finally took the brave step of picking O'Shea in the middle of the park for the critical final qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup when Ireland faced Switzerland at Lansdowne. O'Shea was abysmal that night and looked lost. He was completely outplayed by Johann Vogel who was a very competent midfielder for the Swiss. It was the wrong selection at the wrong time, and a contributing factor to the anaemic performance which led to Kerr losing his job.
Thats why I'm telling u for the last time pal, Oshea was a poor man's Mark Lawrenson. In that mould. Thats why Lawro was pivotal for Eire. As a pundit he is a clown a cartoon of himself but what a Player Lawro was!!

Think he has the right personality for an assistant manager, calm and collected. Hopefully himself and Crawford can build on Kenny's good work.
We're decent enough..

Agreed but any word on why Tom Mohan wasn't just moved up one level?

Doing well with the 19s, they clearly see something in Crawford. Halfway through a campaign as well so more continuity with Crawford.

It's also possible that Mohan isn't keen on an assistant role.

Anyone remember some Sindo journalist wrote a long article about her romantic encounters with John O'Shea while on holiday somewhere, about 10 or 15 years ago? Or was it a dream?

Dan McDonnell tipping him as well along with Lee Carsley. Carsley would be a huge coup if they pulled that off.

Highly unlikely but would be great if he came on board. He's very well regarded by the FA.

I'd see it as a step down for Carsley.

I remember there were (clearly untrue) rumours about John O'Shea and James McFadden many moons ago.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.
