I would assume its down to fans feeling the warm and fuzzies about a club legend. In his day he really was that player people wanted to do well. He appeared out of nowhere, and started banging goals in, spent a decade at the club, scored one of the club's most famous goals to secure the European Cup. Scored over 100 goals, and I suspect if injury had not really caught up with him in the finals years he would have played over 500 games. He also had a close relationship with the fans through MUST, and did well as Reserve team manager. But it has to be down to sentiment. At the moment he is struggling with a really deep pool of good players, and at the moment is conducting himself with a weird arrogance that his managerial record doesn't warrant.

The team are crying out for a midfielder but instead the club owners by a celebrity goal scorer who just makes the balance of the team worse. Scoring goals wasn't an issue last season.

No doubt a midfielder should have been the main priority but United were right to sing Ronaldo especially with Cavani picking up niggling injuries, Martial has been Space Jam’d.

They were forced into action to prevent him going to City!
That would have been serious trouble for them if he had went there and was banging them in and leading City in their continued domination of Manchester

Ole is building for the future. If you can't see that, it's simply because you don't know enough about the great job he is doing.

Possibly, back when Fergie won titles with 75-80 points.

I think his signing will be Ole's sacking the expectation to win the league and Champions League with him have gone right up. Varane, Sancho and a midfielder would have been the perfect summer and they would have a much better balanced team, providing the midfielder had worked out.

Bit like the Alexis Sanchez signing though in that United only signed Ronaldo to stop city getting him

He’ll obviously do better than Sanchez did, probably has done already

No matter how many signings United make there always seems to be one position that their fans are continually going on about that they need to be able to compete. A midfielder it is this season

Well that’s complete rubbish! It’s been a proper defensive midfielder United have needed the most for the last couple of seasons.

Did they not sign Matic and Fred for that position though? To "free up Pogba"

Matic signed over four years ago while Fred signed over 3 years ago! It’s been pretty obvious from the start Matic was well past it and Fred is definitely not good enough to be a defensive midfielder, it wasn’t his position at Donetsk.

A midfield of Static, Afraid and McTimid will win you nothing when Pogba, Fernandes and Ronaldo are ahead of them.

Watching PSG last night, they leave the three amigos up top and the other 7 work like tigers they have Wynaldum, Gueye, Veratti and Herra to pick from.

Begs the question why didn’t united just keep Herrera and get him to work like a tiger
