RIP. An extraordinary reign, lasting over 70 years. Loved by monarchists and respected by many Republicans. The landscape has changed a lot during her time, but one of her key legacies will have been securing the future of the British monarchy for time to come.

i don't think things would be all rosy in the english garden were the british monarchy to come to an end. when monarchies meet their demise its usually as a result of a bloody conflict. Russia, Germany, Austria, Ottoman empire, Spain, Portugal, France, Greece etc etc...all these countries had monarchies which were toppled following horrific blood loss on the part of the civilian population.

A good friend of Ireland. Her visit to Ireland in 2011 and especially the moment she met Martin McGuinness was beautiful. I think she was the glue holding the Royal Family together and it will go into decline over the coming years. It could help to hasten the break up of the UK. A seismic moment that was obviously coming sooner or later but no less seismic for that. |

Flag at government buildings at half mast. That's a bit much. We haven't had a monarch since 1937
