Usual hyperexaggeration but he does look like he belongs in the Premier league for sure and I finally feel for the first time in so long, we have a left back capable of performing  at international level, that was always our biggest weak spot though now plenty of others further up the pitch. I think looking ahead, and with the players coming through we should look to cut out the wingers and just give Stevens and Doherty full reign to attack the flanks.

The back 5 is set imo:

                                              Randolph

Young Doherty           Duffy                        Egan                  Stevens

I'd drop Coleman ta feck

Stevens is looking better all the time. Obviously playing at the higher level is improving him.
Our back line is very solid.

The posters who are saying if we qualified for the euros we'd get a similar humbling to 2012 are not taking into account how much better our defence is now to then.

Then we had a badly injured keeper pretending he was fit, great servant 33 year old Richard Dunne at centre half on his last legs, great lad but journeyman and injury prone Sean St Ledger partnering him, 31 year old, one too many injuries John O'Shea at full back and Stephen Ward on the other side, who probably became a better player later towards the end of his career.

Wouldn’t be as bad as 2012 but our offense has no hope and the defense can only hold up for so long. Probably 3-0 or 4-0 against teams like Spain.

100% : we gave away a load of terrible goals in that tournament....the defence was either injured, unfit or way past it.

One of the best examples of that was Croatia's first goal - Given took half the night to get to that header. A fully fit Given would surely have saved it.  Their 3rd where the ball hit the post and went in off Given was similar, again if fully fit, he would have got to it before hitting the post.

As you say, we really didn't do ourselves any favours in that tournament.

I remember looking at the squads of all the qualified nations in a supplement to the IT or the Indo and I was genuinely stunned at the gap in quality between our squad and the rest of those at the tournament. Most notably that our key members had debuted over 10 years previously and most had been integral at the 2002 World Cup. That and the number of “unattached” players, along with a number who had been relegated with Wolves that year. We also left about 8 worthy candidates behind and other useful players totally on the bench.

It was a disaster and I wouldn’t see it being repeated in the expanded form.

A fully fit Given would probably have caught it let alone stop it. Shocking goal to concede and set the tone for the rest of the tournament.

Agreed that Stevens has looked the part so far this season. Not sure about 'best' left back in the league but he's definitely up there from what I've seen. Very comfortable in possession and nearly always seems to take the right option.

If we play 3 at the back, Enda should be the left wing back as he's been in very good form.

If we play a back 4 he could do a job on the left wing. Much better option than mcclean in my opinion.

Great end product with regard to crosses and beating a player.

Some glowing reviews on Stevens performance against arsenal on the bbc.

With Doherty and Stevens playing wing back for ireland, we'll have a couple of top players causing problems for the opposition

Man of the match - Enda Stevens (Sheffield United)

The wing-back stood up manfully to the task of marking flying winger Nicolas Pepe and remained a constant outlet out wide. No United player had more touches on the ball

You'd imagine himself and Egan will be receiving a revised contract offer in the summer. Someone on here mentioned Egan was on 7500k a week.

That's an insane wage for Jagielka. How players of that age can command such a contract is laughable. They should be on a downward sliding scale not matching his wage from everton who wanted him off the bill ffs.

He's played feck all too but i am sure "he's a great pro and brilliant lad to have about the place"

Their 2nd highest earner (Besic) has only played 9 times in the league too.

A lot of their low earners have been instrumental in their success so far, so they could find themselves in a bit of bother if they all come looking for contract re-negotiations.
