Watched the game and he did ok, got up and down the pitch really well, put in a few solid tackles and some nice link up play.

Would have liked to see him demand the ball more and get tighter on midfielders when Brighton were in control of the game.

Most definitely not his best performance but his confidence grew in the game.

Pretty much sums up why he never amounted to the player his abilities suggested. As Trap said....he needs to...show more...ehhhhh....personality.

Just before he broke his leg when at everton, I thought he was playing his best football and making a solid impact in games.

@banjaxed - I think his confidence is shot and it's taking a long time to get it back. With the broken leg most likely in the back of his mind going into any tough tackle and knowing that any loose pass while fighting for a place in the first team puts the pressure on.

He really needs a run of three or four games.

"Demand the ball more"... was he not playing as an emergency left back last night?

That phrase is one much more closely associated with central midfielders.

Just a look at the Palace forums, it does say that McCarthy was playing or was moved to left back.

He wouldn't set me free,
So he kept me soul for ransom.

McCarthy played CM for the second half last night. James McArthur was moved to left back.
"I called him an embarrassment to FIFA and to himself," .... He said 'No-one speaks to me like that'.... and I said, "well I do' and that was that."

Great to see, hope he lasts
Flying so high, trying to remember
How many cigarettes did I bring along?
When I get down I'll jump in a taxi cab
Driving through London town, to cry you a song

I can't wait until he makes himself unavailable in March.

James McCarthy starts again today which is really good to see considering the Whelan situation. Idah on the bench for Norwich too which is good.

I seriously doubt that. You have to voluntarily want to play first.

Personally, I take him at his word. Between March 2017 and April 2019 he played extremely limited amounts of football, and almost got something of a second chance by signing for Palace. If he’s starting weekly or regularly MM will want him in midfield and I’d expect JM would like that too.

Yeah, I support this view.
If he's still playing regularly and injury-free in March and isn't in our squad for some paltry reason, then we can revise this.
