It was a metaphor for the need to be protected from the virus of sectarianism.

Whilst nobody thinks the abuse McClean has been the victim of is right at all, you'd wonder what he hopes to achieve by having a go at his Irish team mates?

I take it you mean moral support from some section of the public rather than the other players?

Maybe both.

I doubt he's the only Irish player to subjected to sectarian abuse in England.

For example - McShane was subjected to abuse quite recently, although it was from another player.

Either way it's still unacceptable and should be called out.

Well, I doubt he's going to get it from other Irish players by trying to throw them under the bus. Strange way about going about things: Surely if you had an issue then you'd have a few private conversations.

It's obviously right it is called out - He just has a slightly strange way of going about things.

We don't know if anything was said in private, could be just a matter of frustration at the authorities who seemed to have just turned a blind eye to it all because he's Irish.

If things have been said in private with other Irish players and he's still gone public then I'd say he'll have a whole corner of a dressing room to himself the next time the squad meet up.

I don't know what the debate is about here. His statement was meant to ruffle feathers and highlight that zero has been done by the Premier League/FA about the constant abuse he receives. People wondering why he doesn't seek to play outside the UK will just sweep the issue under the rug until another proud Irishman (probably from the north) stands up for their beliefs in England.

I do think mentioning other Irish players is a funny one. Most will have a small window to earn obscene money over a short career so I can see why they'd stay quiet. Whether that's right or wrong is another thing.
