Not sure I'd read too much into that. It's the League Cup; teams get rotated.

Surely after tonight enough is enough and McClean will now finally be put out to pasture. He can't pass the ball to a team mate with any consistency, he gives away a ridiculous amount of possession game after game and spends the rest of the time tearing around the field like a deranged lunatic, flying into tackles and giving away free kicks trying to win back ball that he has lost. Should have been taken off sooner tonight.

I don't think there's a player in the squad who is less suited to the kind of football we're trying to play than he is. Hopefully we won't have to watch much more of him in an Ireland jersey. I don't care how committed he is, he's nowhere near good enough.

I’m not a big fan but thought he turned them over in the first half twice in their own half?

Given we didn’t barely shoot at their goal in the first half I thought he made a decent contribution.

Overall he’s deeply average who is an impact sub.

He had a very good game tonight. The yellow card was frustrating as it was unnecessary, not to mention that the referee had played an advantage that we didn't really want, but he had a good game. As did the referee, who came in for some bizarre criticism.

Thought tonight was his night, he gets a lot of abuse because of his politics, some deserved some not, hope he gets his 100 caps, but think his days are numbered

I will only ever abuse him based on his football!

Even at the limited standard we are playing at these days, he's not good enough.

He'll do well to make 80 caps, never mind 100.

He did fine. Anyone laying the blame for our latest failure at his door is misguided at best. And entirely missing the wider picture.

He's only one of a number that are holding us back. Same applies to Hourihane, Hendrick, Brady and possibly one or two more.

Easy to point that out of course, harder to find the players who are good enough to replace them. But over time Connolly, Molumby, Knight and hopefully a few more will do just that.

Ah would ye stop. You have had it in for McClean since day one and refuse to see any other angle. Having a pop over his performance last night just proves that point. Play a different record ffs

By the sounds of things he was pitched in at the last minute because of the connolly situation. As usual he dug in and put in a big shift. He'll be phased over the next two years im sure

Sensational interception in the first few minutes when Slovakia broke from a corner.

And whilst he did well for that, his contribution in an attacking sense was typically non existent.

It wasn't. His interceptions created half-chances, he had one chance himself and put at least two good balls into the box. You can argue he didn't do enough offensively, but it was nowhere near 'non existent'.

There was one moment last night that typified McClean as a player.  He won the ball back brilliantly and preceded to pass it back to a Slovakian player to set them on a counter attack, he then chased him down and took a yellow for it.

I admire his commitment and what he's done but he needs to be phased out.

I'd play him only as cover now and more as LB cover. Are his legs are gone a little, noticed the last couple of games he is not really taking on players anymore.

That's stretching it to say the least, in order to have a very good game you would expect a far greater return in open play from a player.

I wasn't happy with his inclusion, but he did alright and would have gotten pass marks.

It's very clear heading into 2021 that some players roles need to be lessened while others need to be given more responsibility.

Agree with most on his performance, I wasn't happy to see him on the team sheet mostly because he just hasn't played football this season but also because he's not suited to a passing game.

But last night he was ok, the yellow card was typical of him, he has possession of the ball, gives it away cheaply, chases it down and commits a foul resulting in a yellow.

All in all a pass but thats it.
