Moving the goalposts now but aren't ye?
McCarthy isn't gonna go 352 to suit Stevens, he will hardly do it to get arguably our best player Doherty in. If fit McClean will start, for right or wrong. 451 in slovakia is almost nailed on. Mick won't change now, unfortunately.

Not sure where I moved the goalposts exactly? Can you explain?
I'd like to see Stevens play left wing back but I don't see why he wouldn't be a good replacement for mcclean on the left wing if mcclean isnt available. I haven't mentioned formation, so I dont see what you're responding to? |

He plays left back for Ireland, you want him to play left wing or left wing back which ever one is suiting your argument at the time. Why you think he can play left wing is beyond me? What makes you think he can do a job there? AAs another poster mentioned, mick will probably jam Hendrick in there first.
According to your own forensic stats breakdown, he doesn't do enough. When pointed out that McCleans 'stats' are far better you then want him as a wingback, hence moving the posts.
I do agree with ye in his best position is in a 352 but Mccarthy won't play that. For what its worth I believe McClean has being v lucky in that there is no one half decent who could take his spot, as in a traditional left winger like he is. Plus O'Neill and McCarthy love his work rate rather than talent. Add in he can score a goal its a no brainer in this type of manager. |

You're either intentionally misconstruing my point or you haven't got the cognitive abilities to understand.
I'll dumb down my point just for you. Mcclean 10 goals, this good return, some goals important. Mcclean 3 assists not so impressive. Thought would be more. Mcclean potentially out of game. feel with Stevens we replace injured mcclean, we not worry. Stevens 2 assists already from left back. Stevens good going forward, plays high level premier league. Better option than other ireland options for mcclean position (example hendrick) so not worry. This my opinion on forum. Not personal against mcclean, not discussed formation just best option in opinion. Not comparing stats with other player just adding detail. |

OK so now your being obtuse, I'll ask ye a simple question. Who's gonna play left back if you've Stevens playing left wing? Ffs talk about rearranging a team just so your 'point' is made.

You're right, I was being obtuse, apologies for that cardwizzard. Left back is a good question, it's another area that we don't have a lot of strength in depth. If we definitely must play 442 then we could look to blood some untried players. Manning seems to be starting for QPR again or maybe if we play Doherty at left back and Coleman as right back. That may work.

Even though it's not his natural position, Johnny Hayes always does a decent job at left back.

Not a bother... We all want a decent performance and to proceed on to the final of playoffs, so fingers crossed. Johnny Hayes I like too HB, could do a better job as a replacement for McClean I'd say. However whether that's mick thinking, id doubt it. |

My recollections of Duff. From 1998-2001 didn't do anything much even though he was playing brilliantly for Blackburn Rovers. 2002 WC Unbelievable 2003 played well against Russia I think and can't remember him much but played ok if I remember. 2005-2007 I cant remember him much at all. Was he injured? 2008-2011 Apart form 2002 WC I think these were his best years

A good pull back for Keane in Paris in '09 is the only thing I can remember in those years.

I remember when Duff first broke through, there will people in the stands giving out when he was playing “he’s got two left feet take him off” . Took him awhile to come good, the 2002 campaign he started playing great and mick even played him up front with Robbie for a good few games

Always thought it was a waste when Mick played him up front. He would always drift out on to the left wing and leave Robbie as lone striker. Never worked, from what I remember.

This was down to Mick's unwillingness to leave out the hardworking but very limited Kilbane, as well as a paucity of quality forward options. That said, his direct running with the ball in central areas seemed to work well at the World Cup.
