Consumer wins both on price and accessibility and state gets any profits from route.

No brainer.

are any of the state owned transport companies making profit now?

Ya some wonderful minister back in the 50's thought it would be a good idea to have the tracks ripped up after the railways were closed Confused

As bad decisions go, this may well have been the finest. The main decision to close the lines was one thing, the speed they pulled up the physical lines was a worse one, sometimes taking place mere days after the closure.

Read somewhere there is some EU directive these days stopping countries ripping up railway infrastructure for 10 years after closure. Bit late for us, we actually had the best rail network in Europe in the 1920s, and nearly 2/3rds of it was gone by 1970, a short 30 years later, you are looking at the GDP of a developing nation to build one bit of a line from Dublin all the way to the airport.

as Brian says and in addition they are more likely to make even more of a profit if they get the profitable routes.

Not point in giving a load of express routes and profitable routes to private companies and then leaving the state companies with Kilrush to loop head every 2nd tuesday after a full moon and blame them for not making a profit.

They need to be able to get the high density routes also. Anyway regardless of the ownership.  A full integrated route to the airport is the way forward.  Aircoach is not a fully integrated network.

In this day and age I am nto sure how relevant that is.

Either is Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Guinness (Diageo) and so many other companies.   They do employ irish people though to do the jobs.

What he does is he follows the aircoach route, stopping at each coach stop about 10 minutes before its due and asking people waiting for the aircoach are they interested, its a tenner 1 way from Bray, decreasing thereafter at each aircoach stop. Yes he will do collections, collected the 3 of us from the house last year and charged €25 1 way to airport.
