Niall Quinn on Marion Finucane this morning. He was excellent. Well worth a play back 20min listen. Had an indirect cut at FAI and what's wrong with the LOI and schoolboy game in this country.

Niall Quinn is devising the most ambitious and radical plan in Irish football history as he hopes to revive a sport at its lowest ebb since the 1970s. The former Ireland forward, and chairman of Sunderland, wants to revolutionise the sport’s academy system with a €40million injection to benefit young players from Ireland and around the world. Depressed by the ongoing practice of uneducated Irish footballers leaving home to chase an improbable dream, coupled with the demise of the senior international team, Quinn’s proposal can be divided into two parts. Firstly, he has already tapped into his political and business contacts to sound out potential investors who would be willing to pay into a €40m per-annum fund that would finance academy systems within the League Edited by Double Maxim - 09 Jan 2019 at 12:36pm |

Read about this earlier and not sure if it's pie in the sky stuff or not. Firstly he hasn't officially got anyone on board yet I don't think merely sounding people out. Secondly 2m per club. Is that enough to start good academies? Would the clubs end up spending the money on other things? Would Delaney relinquish control? He might get rid of his problem child but if Quinn shows him up by doing a good job he will come out of it looking bad. Then again it might be 5-10 yrs before you see any progress after investment and Delaney will be in UEFA by then.

Niall Quinn says he has been contacted by interested parties who want to get behind his plan to create new academies for every League of Ireland club with the help of state funding.
But the former Ireland striker is yet to speak with anybody from the FAI and says he favours getting the government on board before presenting a proposal to the football authorities. Quinn believes that a figure in the region of €40m - that's €2m per club - would be required to give every club an academy and his argument is that proper education should be at the centre of any plan. He feels that an independent league - free from FAI control - should offer a viable alternative to sending kids away to England at 16. The 52-year-old also believes that a new structure should target overseas talent to lift standards and generate funds. Quinn favours tax breaks to encourage investment and get the idea off the ground and indicated that Red Strike - an Irish-led company which has created academies in Vietnam and South Africa - are an example of one group that wants to come into the market here. |

It is not pie in the sky, actually it makes perfect sense. I am not 100% sure on the legalities but I don't think the FAI own the League. There maybe a participation agreement that lasts a particular length of time but after that the clubs do not have to re sign.
My only worry is who would run it. The FAI basically ignore the League other than the licensing portion, but when the clubs ran the League it was 100 times worse. Possible if the licensing was outsourced to an independent 3rd party, the clubs could then take back control

Interesting quotes in that article. Quinn is a political animal. He’s talking about an alliance in government and business that could be stronger than Delaney’s, taking the FAI out of the league equation altogether. A remarkable proposition.

Kinda like Murdoch taking control with Sky in 1992. Who do we have in Ireland who could do that, I know - Denis O'Brien Joking aside it's great news. |

You’re dead-on. All these investors will be looking at premier league as the model. That’s how you get the big bucks involved. I mean, it will never work but still
