It must be a very high average if it was good enough to be the ever present centre piece in the leagues 2nd best defence.

Not really, they are financially restricted, run a small enough squad and were under a transfer embargo for much of the season, including the January transfer window. Egan was fine for them last year but no more than that and he seems to be struggling now with the step back up. Not every player in a promoted team is outstanding, the same way as not every player in a relegated team is sh*t.

No, but if you're an ever present centre back in one of the most miserly defences in the league, it's unlikely that you were less than very good.

We're decent enough..

He got promoted last year in team with the 2nd best defensive record in the Championship, playing 45 of their 46 games...

He may have had a tough first month back in the EPL (in a team that clearly isn't equipped for it btw), but I reckon proclamations of an irreversible decline might be a bit premature based on the evidence that stretches back further than 6 weeks ago LOL

Have seen it said that he’s been playing through injury for the last while and SU weren’t happy he played during the recent international break. He’s never going to look brilliant in the PL but he does look like he’s playing within himself a bit.

Him retiring from international football to prolong his club career would not be comparable to a proud Cork / Kerry man calling it a day for Ireland at the age of 30.

Many centre-backs only enter their prime from 29-32.

Looks to me like Egan is on the way down already, tbh. He isn't as good as he was a few years ago. Wouldn't want him to retire but I think we'd manage without him.

I don't disagree, but I doubt he'll see it like that.

I doubt Egan retires, but I can see him being pushed out of a starting spot by this time next year.

Especially if we move to a back four.

Norwood also had a serious fall-out with Michael O’Neill who would not let him play to his strengths as he saw it. Egan is a different character who takes immense pride in playing for Ireland and will never turn down a call when fit.

He was an injury doubt in the lead up to the last window and the word going around was that the club wernt too happy he played for Ireland. Regardless, that club us in trouble at the moment

From the bit I've watched Egan looks like he isn't able to run properly. I thought the same at the Dutch game. I think he's playing through an injury

Aye, he's looked like he's running in treacle for a while now. Youd nearly hope it is injury related cos his form has been pretty shocking.

At home as well.

John hasn't played consistently well in a while to be honest, he was only average in Sheffield United's promotion campaign. Hope it's an injury at the moment but it feels like he's well below his levels of a few years ago these days. Tough weekend for a lot of our older lads, Egan, Duffy, Hendrick and McClean have a bad weekend.

If ever a game suited Duffy it should be a backs to the wall situation in Paris. Bring him in for that game, take him out again for the home game.
